Show Little has come from the Orient for a few days past except the news of the little clash between the scouts of the opposing forces which was but an indication that the armies are drawing nearer and nearer together in preparation for the first great land battle. Both sides mean to make it decisive de-cisive if possible, and if, when the battle Is finally set in array, both armies are ready, It will doubtless doubt-less be one of the most terrible of modern battles. Six hundred thousand trained men, both of fighting fight-ing races, equipped with all modern devices for murder and both sides determined, if possible, to win, can scarcely fail to result in a slaughter to make -the world shudder. - The Japs have two or three times within the last ten days fired some shots Into Port Arthur, but they are not so rash as at first. We suspect that some of their ships suffered more than they permitted to be told. They still seem intent on trying to obstruct the mouth of the harbor and bottling up the Russian fleet within it. |
