Show nB; . i ! i 'j THE CONTEST FOR THE NEWHOU8E TROPHY. Tfhe preliminary contest for the posesslon of the valuable trophy offered by Samuel Newhouse for the championship In singles for the women members of the Country Club will be played off today to-day and owing to tho unusual amount of Interest manifested In the event, there will be a large crowd of society people at the Club to witness the play. The trophy, a hanJsome tea set froiri Tiffany's, which is by far the most beautiful prize ever offered of-fered In the state, must be won twiceby the successful suc-cessful player, and the winner of this year's championship cham-pionship will have her hands full defending the title another season. The defeat of Miss Kate Williams by Mrs. Thomas Gould Grlflln last Saturday puts an entirely en-tirely new phase on the situation, and judging from tennis form, and baring accidents, the finals will probably be played by these two young women. But this is by no means certain, as the Improvement shown by a number of the girls the past month is nothing short of phenomenal. It is to hesitate In picking the winners of today's to-day's events, but on a chance the situation may be sized up about as follows: Mrs. Keith will probably best Miss McCor-nick McCor-nick and Miss Marge Miller will probably win from Mrs. J. B. Woodward. Miss McCornick has improved wonderfully in her game, however, and the back hand stroke that Marge Miller has devel-opend devel-opend is very dangerous. Miss Cosgriff will be attended to by Miss Laura Sherman, who plays a superior game, while the contest between Mrs. Cunningham and Miss Kinney Kin-ney is about a stand-off. Miss McGrath is no match for Mrs. Channing, THE NEWHOUSE TROPHY fll and on present form Miss Salisbury should make short work of Mrs. A. B. Walker. Mrs. Pearsall, Mrs. Sturgiss and Miss Read are out of the city, so Mrs. Copp, Miss Geddes, ana Miss Judge will win by default. Miss Sherman will be easy for Miss Williams, t fl and Mrs. Griffin gets a bye. M No umpire has been decided upon as yet, but Mi It is thought that the lucliy man will be a veteran Wk of the Apache campaigns. WM |
