Show In La Revere, a correspondent gives the cost of a few modern wars, as follows: The Crimean war, 2,000 millions of dollars. The Franco-Prussian war, to the Germans, $250,000,000, to the French, aside from territory lost, $2,800,000,000. The Boer war cost England $1,212,000,000, and the Japanese-Chinese war cost Japan $84,000,000 and China, beside the regular expenses had to pay a subsidy of $146,000,000. Suppose all those wars had been averted and those sums had been expended to improve the schools, the manufactures and the commerce of the people; wouldn't that have been better? Prussia gained a long-sought revenge upon France and with it increased territory and much money, but the others what did they all accomplish? accom-plish? It is time for civilized people to settle their differences without wars. |
