Show THE WORLD'S UNREST. Mr. Meredith Townsend, in his book "Asia and Europe," tells of the poverty and discontent of the people of Europe, despite the advances made through science and the application of modern mod-ern inventions; that there is not work enough to go around; that there are perpetual clashings, a settled envy jf the rich; that rulers reign in constant con-stant dread of explosions; that the belief is that only by extending trade can quiet be maintained and that their experts continually teach that Asia, with half the world's population should supply for them the desired market It is strange that national selfishness blinds the eyes of statesman. The myriads of Eastern Asia could supply the desired market if they had anything to buy with, but they have not. If they ever get the means they will not long be buyers; they will build their own manufactories and be such sellers that Europe cannot compete with them. There is plenty of land, plenty of minerals, min-erals, unestimated resources In the Dominion, in Spanish America, in Africa; why do not those overcrowded nations send away their surplus peoples peo-ples and occupy those countries? We t suspect the only reason is that the sovereigns sov-ereigns of the Old World still cling to the thought that if their subjects go to new lands and plant colonies, those colonies should likewise be under their rule. One would think that the spectacle which the United States presents would cure all that Our country as an ally of Great Britain would he worth vastly more to her, were she in trouble than it would ho as a colony. The Kaiser is hurrying to completion a great navy. Justly or not the world believes his dream is to found a lesser les-ser Germany in Southern Brazil. It would be vastly better for him and his people to try to create a country there wliich would, a few years hence, be to Fatherland what the United States is to England. Russia in her lust for land, for trade and for power, years ago laid her plans to dominate the Pacific. So far she has accomplished accom-plished nothing save to set the Mongolian hive swarming. If she is victorious, then there will bo a menace over Western Europe from her power, if she fails what wlil the Mongolian do? Suppose to the millions of Japan, China and India In-dia the word goes out that the hosts of the great White Czar have been rolled back by unsupported unsupport-ed little Japan, what then? Then Russian had not the motive which im-pells im-pells central and western Europe to want more land, she already has plenty, and had she kept out of this war and used the money that it is costing to secure for her poor millions better homes and better schools, how different the results re-sults would have been. The real trouble is, the earth's rulers have not you learned the great truth that all men are created free and endowed with certain inalien- Iable rights and that the Government which acknowledges ac-knowledges those facts and gives to Its people the chance to work and to own what they earn, is the Government that is most secure and honored. When the nations meet and agree to reduce their armies and navies, that their hosts of consumers con-sumers may become producers, and given a chance to take and possess the world's uncultivated unculti-vated acres and to enjoy what they produce, then the world's heart-burnings and sorrow will begin be-gin to pass away; then there will grow up in men's hearts a respect for righteous laws- then a higher patriotism will be the rule and the world will begin to gravitate toward the millin-nium. |
