Show A correspondent of the News deplores the H railroad improvements about to bo inaugurated H in the western portion of the city and anticipated M great damage to property in that region demands M justice. Where property is to be really damaged M we think the loss should bo appraised and paid. H But this correspondent has a new idea of what M may constitute damage. In effect he states his M proposition this way: "Suppose men have prop- M orty which they do not desire to either sell or M rent, that the Improvements when made shall M greatly enhance the value of such property, why M should owners of such property be compelled M to pay the extra taxes because of an enhance- ment which they never wanted V Never was ut- M ter, oblivious selfishness more fully displayed. In M effect ho says: "I have no pride in this city, no H desire for its advancement. 'What's Hecuba to H him or he to Hecuba,' if my present tax of $7.00 H is raised 40 cents?" H Nothing but death cures that kind of a com- H plaint. v |
