Show THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. The doing away of the services of three teach- H ers from our public schools; three teachers, all H eminent in their calling, is but another notice WM seived upon the Utah public of what is intended. MU The rule in Utah from the first was to employ no H teachers except Mormons, unless something was H needed where no Mormon could nil the desired H place. The determination is to have no teacher H employed who will not surrender one-tenth of the H wages received to the Church. There is a deeper H purpose also, namely, to make the schools mere H adjuncts to further the cause of the Dominant H Church in short, to Telegate the schools back to H where they stood fifteen years ago . H A majority of the school board understands JW this and is doing what can be done to accom- H pllsh the desired purpose that Is, to Mormonize H the schools. The boast of our American free H schools is that they provide a place where tho children of people of eveiy class and race and H sect can meet on common ground to obtain the rudiments of an education. Because of this our schools are the admiration of the world. They supply the best promise for the perpetuity and M steady advance of our country. The chiefs of the church are determined that this shall bo changed M in Utah, that they shall be, converted into quasi leliglous schools relegated back to where they M were up to 1888. The schools Inaugurated by Gen- M tiles when they obtained control of this city havo M been the means of causing many a family to set- mW tie here. They have been one strong factor in mW tho advance of the city during the past four- M teen years. But those In control here are deter- M mined that there shall be no advance except along the lines they may mark out, and tho first thing WM they want changed, If possible, Is the character of H tho public schools. They are seconded by a por- M tlon of the present school board and they hope to M obtain a strong working majority at the next elec- M tion. Gentiles should keep that in mind and make H their dispositions accordingly. M |
