Show 1 I Volfttcal Vieba Toint. L h L The deflnlto statement of Mr. Frank Knox x. h r that he did not care to have his brow wreathed H '. with the mayoralty laurel was the origin of elab- S orate commentaries on the part of local political wisdom-vendors and resulted in a notable read- ,, justment of political skirmish lines. The prob- ' , lem now agitating the mentality politic is in re- 5" gard to whom Callistor and Anderson, Twins i Heavenly, will impress into service for the place, and whether George T. Odell will develop into the ' A avowed candidate of the Kearns manipulators. M The indications now are that Odell will be hon- ,H ored with the unparalleled distinction of a CH Kearns machine endorsement. ''tBS ' It is known in the inward circle that, at the P Instigation of Governor Wells, Mr. Odell recently , ft x called on Senator Kearns to learn whether his B candidacy for mayor would be satisfactory to that B most brilliant of intermountain statesmanic flfi lights. Mr. Odell came away with his facial linla- , 1P ments bedecked with smiles. This would inil- cate that Senator Kearns beamed on the mayor- 'M& alty aspirant with the sunshine of approval. rflj Odell recently stated that he had received the Hj consent of the directors to make the race, and flj I that of course included the sanction of the rP church president In this state of unique politl- m- cal phenomenae, what more could be desired. M1 Senator Kearns says himself that all that is necessaiy to secure political preferment here is W the endorsement of the Popes, which is his dell- 1 I, cate way of referring to the politico-presidential mm trio. So it woald appear that Odell, with pres- t idential electrical force and a Kearns trolley, IfflHf ought to ride into the chair of the mayorality KRL With all other competitors distanced. !& iH Meanwhile the Heavenly Twins are keeping jfjHfe their own counsel and feeling their way, and the -'WB question of whether or not they will have a fac- -p , tion candidate for the place will depend on the P developments in the Smoot case at Washington. Kp, r If the battle against the sealing of K the junior senator becomes too menacing, it is I deemed probable that they will array their forces m , either in favor of the independent or the Kearns m, f candidate. If the senatorial storm, however, jtj does not rage mightily against the breastworks fly : of Smoot, it is almost certain that the Twins will IE ' bloom out with a candidate. In this case, present Ik indications are that James A. Silver, vice presi- W$ t dent of the Commercial Club, will be their prob- jffj I able choice. Silver has the qualification of being jH i able to supply plenty of campaign bullion, and feIBi- could be manipulated by the Twins with the same iron hand they wield over the servile Bi Eight Immaculates of the City Council. Besides JP$j this, it is thought that Silver's prominent position IP in the Commercial Club would tend to cool the B t antagonism of the members towards them gener- K , ated by their opposition to the Commercial Club's M water bill, introduced in the legislature last sum- wfc: ' mer. K That bill, it will be remembered, provided for k m the appointment of a commission to handle the j water supply of the city. Colonel Holmes, who jjlpj v was fathering the measure, left for Japan while ffiL the measure was pending, and during his ab- R I sence, the bill was defeated through the machlna- B tions of Callister and Anderson. This was ac- K f complished by the Twins in order to keep the con- uj trol of the waterworks system in the hands of W& f their devoted servants, the Eight Immaculates of m f the Council. K ' The Twins were greatly elated over the speech i of Mr. Fisher Harris at the recent Clark baa- !. quet, In which that eloquent speech architect I stated that the club had "butted In" to certain W' things which they ought to have kept out of. wimwmmmmmmmmmmmmmmwmmmmmmmmmmmmwmwmmmmm This the Twin faction took to mean that the club should" not have "butted" into the legislature in behalf of the water bill. So with Silver holding their banner, they think a complete reconciliation reconcilia-tion would be affected. Another important qualification quali-fication of Silver with the Twins would be the fact that he resides in the Second precinct, the home of the Dual-Statesman. Unfortunately Silver recently survived an investigation in-vestigation before the grand jury as to his being the possessor of more than one wife, but the Twins contend that this was merely a trick of the Kearns crowd to kill off their candidate; and if the jury fail of an Indictment they will push the Silver with augmented ardor. tV tp Another Incident which has" caused additional bitterness between the Twins and Kearns factions fac-tions is the attitude of County Attorney Wester-velt Wester-velt since the convening of the grand jury. They contend that that official has sent out many kinds of decoys in order to trip up Anderson. As a result re-sult of this, they will strive to bring about the undoing of Westervelt by using every effort to have the grand jury sift to the bottom the charge of embezzlement made against that official. |
