Show THE GLACIER'S FLOW. The news from the Orient has been most unsatisfactory un-satisfactory for two weeks past. It reads as though the war correspondents, being denied news are drawing on their Imaginations for facts, and, in fancy, running a little war of their own. But a great land battle is due at any time now and as the clouds begin to lift it seems clear that in her sea attacks upon Port Arthur Japan's ships suffered more than at first reported. Experts declare that the real great campaign will not begin be-gin until late in June, but if in the meantime Japan does not seize both Port Arthur and Vladivostok Vlad-ivostok and the railroads that connect them with Russia, then it will not have much show against Its mighty enemy. The war is the most disquieting one that has ever been sprung upon the world since Waterloo. If Japan can succeed in taking Russia's u great Ports, destroying long stretches of Russia' railroads and practically occupying Manchurl then if she is wise she will ask the powers to I tervene and dictate peace on such terms a8 the may deem just, for she ought to appreciate th fact that Russia's progress is like a glacier h flow. Up in Alaskan waters the Meur glacier charging into the sea is the wonder of tourist. As it pushes Its way through the hills to th abrupt shore, its icy terminus is perpetual breaking off and with everlasting detonations fall ing into the ocean. That has been going on since a time before even the date of the legends that ars transmitted regarding it. And its present promij, is that it will continue that flow for uncounted years to come. It Is so with Russia. The Japan ese may mangle and break the ends of that gia cler in the far East, but they will not stop ft flow. The glacier in its course grinds the mountain moun-tain tops Into pulp to make the soil which the men of a later generation are to cultivate to pro duce for them food. Russia is the glacier among nations. Warring powers break off and end not and then, but they do not stop the irresistible flow. On St. Helena Napoleon said: "It was making war on Russia that ruined me, "Russia is the nation that is most liable to march to universal dominion. If I had had 200,05(1 more men In Russia there would have been thai many more lives lost. "I am reproached for not getting myself killed at Waterloo. I think I ought rather to have died in Russia. "In the end Russia will become mistress of the world." |
