Panguitch Volunteers Attend Three-Day Training On "I Can Read" Program Panguitch Elementary Principal Nick Reynolds reported report-ed that eight volunteers that included newly elected school board members Mack Oetting and Jeanne Russo-Whalen were taught by three Panguitch Elementary staff members in preparation for working with students in the school's "I Can Read Program". Syrett Receives Points Of Light Award Gov. Olene Walker and Lt. Gov. Gayle Mc-Keachnie presented pre-sented Vicki Syrett of Tropic with the 205th Utah Governor's Points of Lights Award at a ceremony cer-emony held Dec. 16 at the State Office Building on Capitol Hill. The Governor's Points of Lights Awards, sponsored by the Utah Commission on Volunteers, honors Utah's most outstanding volunteers. Escalante Receives $650,000 In Community Impact Board Funds Escalante received $223,000 in grant funds and a loan for $427,000 to drill a new well, construct a 500,000-gallon water storage tank, and install a pipeline to connect the well and tank to the community's culinary culi-nary water system. Ramp and Railing For Hospital's CTI Scanner Unit Steve Fellow Renovation and Bis Construction (brothers Wayne and Duane Sawyer) teamed up to construct a an attractive ramp and railing leading up to Garfield Memorial Hospital's CTI Scanner Unit housed near the Long Term Care Facility. Boulder Park Finds Funding Through National Scenic Byway A small group of Boulder residents res-idents acting on behalf of their town has received financial commitments from t he Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Federal Highways Administration Scenic Byway Program for funding of nearly $80,000 to develop the Boulder Town Parkway. Basketball Kicks Off A New Season Sports writer John Yardley reported on early season games for both boys and girls teams. Bryce Valley's girls defeated Tabiona and Duchesne on con secutive nights. Panguitch topped Wayne, Panguitch girls and boys defeated Fredonia at ' home. Panguitch girls defeated Milford and then won the three-' three-' day Cactus Classic in Mesquite. Bryce Valley girls defeated Waterford. Panguitch boys defeated Rich at Randolph and hen Christian Heritage. Global Weather Control System In The News Toni Thayer reported on a flurry of news articles appearing in October on Dr. Ross N. Hoffman's vision to design and implement a central command post for .the world's weather control activities. Girls Make History Sports writer John Yardley reported that Bryce Valley's Girls basketball team defeated Panguitch on the Bobcats home hardwood 32-28 for their first win ever against Panguitch. Panguitch came back the next night to defeat Escalante 57-43, but Bryce Valley had a little letdown let-down after their PHS win, losing to Fredonia 63-47, the traveled to Wayne and lost 45-38. In Boys games, Panguitch defeated Altamont 50-36, the lost to Duchesne 50-49. Escalante started their season defeating Altamont 77-61 after losing their opener to Manilla, the defending state champs. Bryce Valley Boys defeated Mt. Vernon 70-56, then lost to Green River 39-38. December Missionaries Elder Jonathon Mangum, formerly for-merly of Panguitch, was called to serve an LDS mission in the Charlotte, North Carolina Mission. Elder Chase Pollock of Tropic returned from serving an LDS mission in the South Dakota Rapid City Mission. Sister Jennifer Davis of Boulder returned from serving an LDS mission in the Mississippi Jackson Mission, Elder Kolter C. Ott of Cannonville returned from serving an LDS mission in the Arkansas Littlerock Mission. Elder Whitney Carroll Houston returned from serving an LDS mission in the Montevideo West Uruguay Mission.
