Show If You Drink And Drive, We'll Provide The Chaser! By Trooper Terry C. Smith Utah Highway Patrol, Section JO, Pl&E Information Officer The holiday season is already here again. Time sure flies when youi're having fun! From now until New Year's there will be parties, dinners, and get-togethers. What a great way to spend the holidays - with family and friends. If you plan to consume copious copi-ous amounts of egg nog or other alcoholic beverages, please do so responsibly. Make sure you have a designated driver or make other arrangements to get home. We're not the kind of chaser you want to see at the end of your party. Between Christinas and New Year's, the Utah Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies will be doing a statewide impaired driver blitz. We will have officers from all agencies working overtime shifts, concentrating on removing remov-ing impaired drivers from the roadways. So you better watch out! We will be working hard to make sure this season is a safe I one for all of us. Dec. 20-22 is another CARE holiday reporting period with extra troopers on the road to make the weekend safe for travel. trav-el. We will be watching for speeding and aggressive drivers and impaired drivers. Operation CARE stands for "Combined Accident Reduction Effort," and is about State Law Enforcement Agencies joining together to endeavor to reduce human suffering suf-fering on our highways, particularly particu-larly during the national holidays. holi-days. Operation CARE was formed as a multi-jurisdictional program pro-gram of patrol, enforcement, and planning activities committed commit-ted to the goal of accident reduction. reduc-tion. Since 1977 several organizations organ-izations have joined with Operation CARE in a combined effort to deter the three key causes of highway fatalities: speeding, impaired driving, and failure to use occupant restraints. Make sure you plan your trip, get plenty of rest, and don't be in such a hurry. One of the most common questions 1 get from people is, "Why are people in such a hurry?" That's a great question. Why are we all in such a hurry? Let's slow down, take a deep breath, and chill. We might be surprised at what we see if we just take a moment to look around. On behalf of Section 10 of the Utah Highway Patrol, I would like to thank all of you out there for your help and support. sup-port. Our jobs are a lot easier (See UHP on page 5 A) t UUP From Front Page with the help and support we get from the community. We would especially like to thank the hospital hos-pital staff, the EMTi's, and fire department personnel around the counties for their help and support. sup-port. Thank you to the other police agencies that back us up and assist us in our duties. A special thanks to the media for their support and help in getting our messages out.
