Show Manila Wins 1A State Championship The Manila Mustangs upset Tabiona 45-43 Saturday night to capture the title for the second consecutive year. Escalante had the Mustangs down by two with six seconds to play, in the quarterfinals, but Jeff Catron hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to defeat the Moquis 51-50 and springboard spring-board Manila into the semi's and on to the finals. Before Catron's heroics, Adam Mclnelly had penetrated and dished off to Garrison Lyman in what appeared to be the winner. Oh, what might have been! As it turned out, Escalante and Panguitch battled it out for 5th and 7th, with Escalante winning win-ning behind a gigantic game from Adam Mclne'lly who bombed in 25 points on the strength of five three-pointers 56-52. Adam finished the season with one of his finest games of the year. Both teams were mostly happy to be playing the last day as they defeated local teams from Piute and Valley on Friday. Tyler Barney scored 20 and Cameron Leach 14 in the loss for the Bobcats while Chad Cottam hit 12 for the Moquis. Escalante defeated Piute 46-42 46-42 the third day getting 16 from Cottam and 10 from Dallen Shakespear. Panguitch stopped Valley 54-47 54-47 in a game that was never that close until the end. Barney had 17 and Leach 12 for the Bobcats. Tabiona defeated Panguitch on their way to the title game 64-51. On opening day, Panguitch defeated Mt. Vernon 71-50 as Cameron Leach jammed in 28 points. Tyler Barney contributed con-tributed 18 and Kyle Bateman 11. Escalante played later that first evening as they easily defeated West Ridge 60-46. Chad Cottam got the Moquis going in the tournament with 24 and Dallen Shakespear played well scoring 15. Congratulations to the two teams, their coaches and fans, for representing Garfield County so well in the State Finals. Thanks for reading about basketball bas-ketball during this past season.
