Show NF Supervisor Announces Decision On Timber Sale CEDAR CITY - Dixie National Forest Supervisor Mary Wagner today issued her decision on the proposed Griffin Springs timber sale, located on the Aquarius Plateau, 15 miles northwest of Escalante, Utah. She has approved commercial logging of about 3300 acres of sprucefir forest and 112 acres of aspen within an area of about 12,000 acres. Wagner says the sale was designed to reduce the number of spruce and fir trees to a density den-sity that will help the remaining trees be more resilient to spruce beetle attack. Dead and beetle-infested beetle-infested trees will also be removed. Aspen stands that have been invaded by spruce and fir will be regenerated by clearcutting some patches in the stands. Aspen forests respond to cutting by sprouting seedlings. In making her decision, Wagner said that in addition to the resource benefits afforded by timber harvests, a major consideration con-sideration was the fact that the project will not enter inventoried invento-ried roadless areas, nor undeveloped undevel-oped and unroaded areas. About 22 miles of existing road will be reconstructed in connection with the project. Copies of Wagner's decision can be obtained from the Dixie National Forest. Call Joe Reddan at (435) 865-3700. The decision is subject to a 45-day appeal period. |
