I volunteer at the high school fitness fit-ness center. The last three years I have served as a substitute teacher and bus driver. I became interested in the school board when I found out the board had bought out the last School Superintendent for $70,000. Since that time the board has cut out the music program at the elementary school, with 42 children still involved in the program. Then they cut three teachers out of the Elementary. The third grade teacher has 29 students, with 11 of them resource students. She gets out of class at 8 o'clock on many nights. This year the board is cutting two high school teachers, as well as the drama class with 32 students. Panguitch has one teacher to 21 students stu-dents ratio, while Escalante is running at one to 12. Eight years ago we passed an $8 million bond to upgrade our schools, Escalante has a new theater costing cost-ing $3 million; they have no drama class. Panguitch received a prefab class room and a gym, $1 .5 million. At a school board meeting with about 50 parents in attendance, (I was there to honor Frank Houston on his award), we were 'dismissed by the president, saying they were going to executive board meeting, after we were there for only 20 minutes. I had asked to speak at the meeting but was told that I had to go through the Superintendent before I could get on the agenda. As a taxpayer I was furious. What happened to freedom of speech? I decided then to run for school board. The treatment of parents in attendance was inexcusable and rude. I have found out that the board members receive $250, plus fully paid medical insurance, for one three-or-four-hour meeting a month. Two board members receive $12,500 worth of health insurance at the total cost for the board of $53,000 plus. When you are cutting cut-ting teachers, this isn't right. I will pay for my own health insurance and will donate the $3,000 paid to me back into the arts program to try to bring these programs pro-grams back. I will do my best to bring back the teachers teach-ers into the Panguitch Schools, where they belong. The Panguitch Schools must prepare our students to excel in an increasingly competitive world. Education is their hope for a better life. Teachers are the hope. Paid By The Committee To Elect Maek Oetting V. |
