Show Two Re-Elected Six Municipalities Elect New Mayors Six of Garfield County's eight municipalities elected new mayors may-ors in Tuesday's elections, with two incumbents returned to office. Voters also elected a number of new council members throughout the county. Only one vote separated sep-arated the two mayoral candidates candi-dates in Boulder, and Clerk Judy Davis says there is at least one absentee ballot to be counted. That community also had every town council seat up for grabs. Election judges were kept busy in most communities, counting count-ing the many write-in votes typical typi-cal of smaller municipality elections. elec-tions. Write in candidates receiving re-ceiving fewer than four votes are not reported here, and some communities did not report their write-in votes. Voter turnout percentages per-centages in the county's municipal munici-pal elections often do not reflect a true picture, since many people living near a community who are registered to vote there, cannot vote because they do not live within its boundaries. General elections always provide a more accurate turnout percentage. Panguitch Jon Torgerson, running unopposed unop-posed for mayor collected 426 votes. He replaces former mayor Elaine Baldwin who chose not to run again. Voters also elected two four-year four-year council members, Dennis Orton with 245 votes and Mack Oetting with 217. Steve Hatch received 199 votes and Rick Swanger 172. Craig Twitchell was elected to the city's two-year council post with 262 votes. John Houston collected 182 votes. All were official candidates whose names appeared on the ballot. There were 808 people regis- tered to vote in Panguitch, with 447 voting, for a turnout of 55.3 percent. Shirley Chidester is clerk for Panguitch. Escalante In Escalante, voters elected Sandie Hitchcock as mayor with 176 votes. Former mayor Howard Miller received 164 votes. Both were official candidates with names on the ballot. Three candidates vied for the two four-year council seats, with Lennie Don Porter capturing 280 votes and Chris Christensen receiving 256. Richard Costigan received 79 votes. All three names appeared on the ballot. The single two-year council seat was captured by Stanley Stowe with 165 votes. Todd Macfarlane received 56. Both were write-ins. There are 589 registered voters in Escalante. Clerk Vickie Schul-koski Schul-koski reported 316 voting at the poll and 26 absentee ballots, a total of 342 voting for a turnout of 58 Dercent. Tropic Tropic Mayor Jean Seiler was re-elected with 135 votes. Gaya Greenhalgh garnered 52 votes. Reed LeFevre, incumbent council member, whose name appeared on the ballot, was reelected re-elected with 155 votes. Sandrea Francisco, a write-in, received 71 votes. Other write in candidates included Steve Pollock 19, Steve Winters 15, LaMar Feltner 10, and Rick Bybee 4. Tropic has 381 registered voters, with 190 voting for a turnout of 50 percent. Wendy Brinkerhoff is clerk in Tropic. Two four-year council members mem-bers were elected, Gladys LeFevre with 68 votes and Farlan Behunin with 65. Kevin Eastman received 37 votes and Mark Austin 30. The town's two new two-year council members are Leo Gardner with 81 votes and Kristina Karlsson with 72 votes. Robert Brems received 37 votes. There are 151 registered voters in Boulder, with 104 voting for a 69 percent turnout. Judy Davis is clerk in Boulder. Hatch In Hatch, voters elected Rick Sawyer as mayor, with 37 votes. Incumbent Mayor LaVal Sawyer received 6 votes. Scot Walter, whose name was on the ballot, received 24 votes, electing him to one four-year council seat and write-in Merrill Burrows received 21, placing him in the other open four-year seat. Michael Savage received 11 votes and Carla Sawyer 9. Both had their names on the ballot. Write-in candidate Janet Young received 17. Miriam Nelson is clerk in Hatch. Cannonville Al Stone was elected mayor in Cannonville with 38 votes. John Mathew received 19 votes and Joe Thompson 5. In the race for the two four-year four-year seats, Tom Shakespeare received 54 votes and Joe Hughes 35. Anna Dunham received 21 votes and John Morreale 13. George Thompson was elected to the two-year council position with 38 votes. Mark Nelson received 27 votes. There are 85 registered voters in Cannonville, with 65 voting for 76 percent turnout of voters. Town Clerk in Cannonville is Louise Mangum. Henrieville Thorley Johnson will be Henrieville's new mayor, elected as a write-in. Johnson received 42 votes. Riley Miller received 14 votes, Ed Franz 4 and Carlon Johnson 4. Elected to the two four-year council seats were Ken Piatt with 28 votes and Les Barker with 23 votes. Guy Thompson and Shau-na Shau-na Mortensen each received 21 votes, and Lael Chynoweth 6. There are 129 registered voters in Henrieville, with 63 voting for a turnout of 49 percent. Town Clerk in Henrieville is Zettie Kinter. Antimony In Antimony, William Wiley received 36 votes to take the mayor's seat. Elected to the two four-year council positions were Tim West-wood West-wood with 50 votes and Arthur (Leon) Twitchell with 31. Town Clerk Toby Tobiasson reported 60 registered voters, with 59 voting for a turnout of 98 percent. |
