Show Panguitch Captures 5th At State By John Yardley Panguitch High School went to the boys 1-A State Basketball Championships last week in St. George, struggling a bit with two losses at the region tournament. They emerged as one of the outstanding teams in the tournament. Head coach Scott Hunt and assistants John Orton and Arlin Sawyer brought their team through a very tough four days with flying colors. The Bobcats won three of four games, with their only loss coming the second day to eventual state champ, Tabiona, in a very close game that PHS could have pulled out. Tabiona captured their first-ever first-ever state title as they defeated Duchesne 84-60 in the final. Wayne beat Piute for third and fourth, while St Joseph's won 6th and Valley 7th. Panguitch opened the tournament, tourn-ament, defeating St. Joe's 64-63 in a thriller, as Bobcats Dameon Julander and Austin Owens were perfect from the line in the last few seconds. Jeremy Withers drilled 15, while Mayo Miller and Gaylen Dalton each scored 11. The penetration and outside shooting of Miller and guard Matt Tebbs were keys to the great state tournament play of Panguitch. On Thursday, Panguitch came back from a 16-point deficit to within one of Tabiona, before falling fall-ing 63-56. At one point down the stretch, Tabby hit 17 straight free throws. A miss here and there and the Bobcats were in the semifinals. semi-finals. They never quit in this game and played extremely well. Mayo Miller had a terrific game with a bundle of assists and 15 points. Gaylen Dalton had a fine tournament and finished with 15, while Dameon Julander hit the pressure shots again and scored 1 12. Jeremy Withers, who ended as one of the top scorers in the tourney, hit 10. The Bobcats bounced back to defeat a swarming Wendover team 78-68 in a very hard-fought, physical game on Friday. Jeremy Withers pumped in 28, Gaylen Dalton 20 and Scott Henrie 10 as the seniors had a fine game. This was not an easy win, but a gritty one. Saturday, PHS captured 5th place in the tournament the final day, defeating the Valley Buffaloes Buff-aloes 62-51 in one of their finest games of the entire year. In the first half, the Bobcats raced out to a 35-17 half time lead as Jeremy Withers was hot with 19 first half points. He was assisted with some outstanding passes from the guard combinations of Tebbs and Miller and Dusty Orton and Austin Owens. He went on to score 30 for the game. Gaylen Dalton pumped in 12 as the only other double figure scorer, but this one was really an all-around team victory. Valley made a run the second half, but the Bobcats proved with defense and a penetrating pen-etrating offensive set, they were one of the very best 1A teams at the state finals.
