Show -raihnl? Him By Marlene Haws 826-4859 The weekend of March 20th was a busy one for folks around town. The Relief Society Birthday Party and Homecoming was held at the Escalante LDS Stake Center with a large crowd in attendance. Committee Com-mittee members for the dinner were: Theron and Dixie Mitchell, Jeris and Bonnie Liles, Don and Lillian Coleman, Wallace and Judy Ludgate, Al and Launie Barlow and Blaine and Nancy Porter. Jerry and Sherree Roundy were in charge of the program. Tributes were given to pioneers, teachers, entertainers, war veterans and Relief Society members through the years. Fay Alvey was given a special tribute for her many years of entertaining and helping with programs over the years. Ruby Griffin was given special recognition. On the 20th, it was her birthday, too! She was 49, again! It was a fun day for all. Here with Ruby Griffin were: Jim and Janet Spencer, St. George (glad to see that they were both' feeling better!); Ken and Roma Clark, Salt Lake City; and Wayne and Venid Bailey, Sandy. Raymond Griffin came from Richfield and took his parents, Vernon Ver-non and Hazel, to St. George. Hazel Ha-zel needed more medical attention. Chad Lyman was taken to the hospital in Cedar City after being thrown from his horse while riding on the desert. He had a mild concussion con-cussion but is back home to recover. re-cover. Juanita Thate went to Provo to visit her husband, Bob, who is in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo following a stroke. Carolyn Bowmar is in St. George undergoing treatments for a few weeks. We hope all these people will soon be feeling better. Norman and Ardis Christensen visited with Norm's brothers on (See ESCALANTE on page 4-A) Escalante News From page 2-A their way home from telephone company meetings last week. They visited Sam Christensen in Hurricane Hurri-cane and Roland and Velva Christensen Chris-tensen in Laverkin. They are all doing well. Others attending the telephone meetings were Dan and Lois Spencer, Geraldine Liston and Alan Torgerson. Arnold and Deon Alvey were in St. George for meetings last week. They also spent one day in Loa visiting with daughter, Janeen Duncan, Dun-can, and granddaughter Kristin who was going to Colorado to manage a motel for a while. Rolain Alvey went to Kanab last weekend and on to Flagstaff, Ariz., with Karen Alvey. Tyler Lyman has been in charge of the demolition of the home formerly for-merly owned by Ada Porter. End of another era! Monte and Sylvia Luker were pleased to hear that their daughter, Marinda Luker, had qualified for the Dean's List at the School of Nursing, Nurs-ing, University of Vermont. Congratulations Con-gratulations Marinda! Tom and Kathy Marshall, Car-bondale, Car-bondale, Colo., spent the weekend with Kathy's mom, LaRue Spencer. The city is promoting a drive for scrap metal, copper or brass. II' you have any that you would be willing to donate, please contact Layne Woolsey. The metal will be sold and the money will be given to the Christmas Street Lighting Committee to purchase lights and decorations. Congratulations to former residents, resi-dents, Byron and Sheila Cottam, Springville, who will be celebrating celebrat-ing their 50th wedding anniversary Mar. 27! Garl and Patsy Cottam, Provo, came for the party and to spend a week at their place here. Cory and Michelle Liles and baby daughter came for the party and to visit with their parents, Sharon Dale and Shirley Shir-ley Marsh and Jeris and Bonnie Liles, as well as Michelle's grandmother, grand-mother, Thelma Marsh. Wayne and Pat Banks came from St. George. Wayne would like to be notified whenever we're having a party up here, he doesn't want to miss any of them! Colleen and Floyd Tucker, Cedar Ce-dar City, were here with the Bob Munson's. Glen and Colleen Imlay are here. They have their trailer at Francis Imlay's place for a week or so. .They probably came from Hurricane and are heading north for the summer. Lynn and Judy Griffin had most i of their family here, including Jill Pickett and children Mike Griffin Brandon and Kelly Stubbs, Jason and Dawn Spencer (who also visited Marian and Peggy Spencer), all of Cedar City and Judilynn and Gary Christensen, St. George, who also visited Norman and Ardis Christensen. Christen-sen. Mark Griffin came from St. George, Gary and Sheila Griffin from American Fork. Gary, Brent, Mike and Lynn Griffin have an orchestra, "Purple Sage." They played for the dance on the night of the 20th. There was a nice crowd there and they all had a good time. Said it was more like the old time dances. The music mu-sic was good and there were people there from the ages of three months to 87 years all dancing! Next year should be even better. Jim and Lola Alvey, Mapleton, brought Eva Dean Liston home to stay for a while. They also visited with Fay Alvey. Fay had Steve and LaVee Wiscombe, Ben and Kelly Brown, all of Mapleton, and Raven Coombs, Cedar City, here on the weekend. Vergcan and Carolyn Porter went to Summit for the missionary report of their grandson, Wade Davenport. Dav-enport. Wade has recently returned from an LDS mission to Brazil. He is the son of Vergeania and the late Darryl Davenport of Summit. He came home with the Porters and attended the 1 7th of March party with them. Vergcan had his elbow operated on a couple of weeks ago to correct an old injury, plus a new one on top of it. Hope it will be better now. It wasn't your casting arm was it, Vergcan? That would be hard on a fisherman! Kenneth and Marie Griffin came from Provo on Friday and returned home on Sunday. Visiting at the home of Stanley Haycock were daughter and granddaughter grand-daughter Dawneta and Krista Dunham. Dun-ham. Also son and daughter-in-law Woodrow and Helen Haycock, Tay-lorsville. Tay-lorsville. It was good to see Stanley Stan-ley out to the party. We haven't seen much of him for a while. Woodrow checked in to say he was at the State Basketball Tournament in Provo to watch our boys play ball. While not too many of us saw him, he said he took his little binoculars and surveyed the whole gym so he saw most of us. Elwood Willis, Glenwood, was in town one day last week visiting with his brother, Blaine. He reports re-ports that his mother, Nelda Willis is doing well. We miss you, Nelda! Carlyle Shurtz spends a lot of time here with his father Beryl Shurtz. Wayne Stinson, son of Flo Mitchell is here to stay for a while. His brother Lanny Mitchell spends a lot of time in Salt Lake City tak- , ing care of his father. I need to put in a register at the top of Main Street somewhere so all of you who come to visit can sign in when you come to town. My apologies to those I've missed this time. Delia Christiansen is home for the summer. She spent the winter in Las Vegas, Nev., with daughter Chad Mecham. Charl brought her to St. George where Alice Ann Lyman met them. Both Alice Ann and Delia had doctor appointments, after which they came on home. Alice Ann's doctor released her and says she is okay now since the haystack fell on her and crippled her up. She had quite an ordeal, so we're glad she's better. And glad Delia can be home again. Our condolences to the family of Marjorie Leak who passed away on the 21st in the Dixie Medical Center in St. George. |
