Show j EscQlqntc News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Barbara Munson came from Provo to spend a few days with her mother, Nelda Munson. Harold (Sox) Spencer is in the hospital in Panguitch. Lora Engberg took a ride to the Garfield Memorial Hospital and a life flight to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City with what they thought was a heart attack. Everything checked out okay though and she is back home ready to go back to work. A large crowd was in attendance at Sacrament meeting in the LDS Second Ward last week. Clem Griffin Grif-fin was released as bishop of that ward and Dal Liston took his place. Clem's councelors, Line Chynoweth and Alan Torgerson will stay in as Dai's councelors. They all spoke, as well as Dustin Shakespear who has received a mission mis-sion call to Nashville, Tennessee. Patricia Barney has a new baby boy. Braxton Othello, Named for both his grandfathers, Gerald O. and Othello Barney. Grandmothers are Carol and Roxie Barney. The baby girl of Brian and Kim Dutton was blessed in the LDS First Ward. She was blessed by her Grandfather, Dueane Dutton and given the name Josie McKatie. Her grandmothers are Sharon Dutton and Gloria Gracie. Great-grandparents Great-grandparents Parley and Leda Pratt. Lamar Gracie is also a grandfather. Leslie Venuti spent some time in St. George with her daughter, Megan Bowler, and family. Her small granddaughter Kendra Bowler, is still having skin grafts since she was badly burned a year or so ago. Anne Spencer had a dental appointment ap-pointment in Cedar City Wednesday, Wednes-day, then she and Karl went on to St. George where they do work in the LDS Temple two days a week. Klyn and Marlene Haws had a doctor appointment in Cedar City also. J. C. and Eva Haws came from Brigham City to spend a night or two before going on to Mesa, Ariz. Dudley Spencer accompanied them to Arizona for a surprise 50th wedding wed-ding anniversary party for Kemp and Orpha Spencer. Hazel Spencer wasn't feeling well enough to go. But she says she is starting to feel normal every other day! Congratulations Congratu-lations to Kemp and Orpha! Thais Griffin visited with her 103-year-old aunt in St. George recently. Iris Sorensen is a sister to Thais' mother, the late Ruby Roe of Panguitch. Iris is also the grandmother of Russell Sorensen, who married the former Carol Gates. Thais says "Aunt Iris has a great sense of humor and is still just as witty as she ever was." Ervin and Colleen Burrows, Springville, visited in town last week. Ervin was a former Escalante Esca-lante forest ranger. They spent time at Otter Creek, Calf Creek, etc. They said the weather wasn't as warm as they would have liked but it "wasn't too bad." The family of Gene and Thais Griffin are the "winningest" bunch! Brent and Kathy Griffin went to their annual Associated Food Show and won a thousand dollar trip to San Antonio, Tex. Kathy couldn't go so Brent took Gene with him. They stayed with Gary and Sheila Griffin in American Fork on Friday night and flew out of Salt Lake City on Saturday morning. They had tickets to the Jazz-Spurs game in San Antonio on Saturday night, stayed at the Marriott Hotel, did some sight-seeing and came back home on Sunday. Melanie Griffin won a trip for two in Las Vegas, Nev. She took her sister Stephanie Volker, of St. George, with her. It was for a week. Included in that trip was a cruise on the Mexican Riviera. Neuman, Lucinda and David Duncan, Cedar City, went to Scotland Scot-land where their daughter, and sister, sis-ter, Heidi has just completed an LDS Mission. Lucinda is the daughter of Melvin and Florence Alvey. Upon their return Heidi will give her mission report and her brother, Michael, will give his missionary farewell talk all on the same day. Mothers Day, Michael's birthday is May 12 and that is the day he will report to the Missionary Training Center in Provo. He will be going to Guam. Deon Alvey, Melvin Alvey and Marlene Haws, Escalante; Gloria Hayden and Garfield County Commissioner, Com-missioner, Clare Ramsay, Tropic and Faye Worthen, Panguitch, went to a five-county senior citizen meeting meet-ing in Hurricane last week. They enjoyed a ride through Zion Canyon National Park on the way down and back by way of the Sand Dunes, north of Kanab. It was a very enjoyable en-joyable day for them. A large crowd was in attendance at the Escalante Stake Conference last week. It's always good to get together with the other members of the stake! Ed and Vada Martin, Orem, spent a few days at their home here last week. Beryl Shurtz has been having his share of problems lately. He had to have three of his toes amputated ampu-tated and is still back and forth between be-tween doctors. But he is home right now so that must mean he is making progress. Carlyle and Barbara Bar-bara Shurtz have been here to help out, but they have gone back home now too. It was good to see a large crowd in attendance at the People For The USA meeting last week. Rick Crawford and Myron Carter had already been helping to do some ground work so we were glad to see them sustained as president and vice president. Marlene Haws is secretary secre-tary of the newly formed organization organiza-tion and Sherry Bacon, treasurer. It's time we all banded together as citizens of Escalante to see if we can put a stop to some of these shenanigans that are being pulled off. We are citizens of the USA too and we need to be treated as such! |
