News Captures Five Writing And Advertising Awards ST. GEORGE The Garfield County News captured five prestigious prestig-ious awards at ,the 106th Annual Utah Press Association Winter Convention held Mar. 10- 13. The News, competing against 19 small Utah newspapers in the same circulation circu-lation classification, captured two first place plaques, a second-place award and two third-place awards. Publishers, editors, and other staff members from 50 Utah news paper-members of the Utah Press Association gathered to conduct the association's business, hear from prominent speakers, learn about the latest in industry innovations, par- ticipate in workshops to improve their products, and honor their peers for their accomplishments. '-Country Recreation Guide, pub- lished annually on Memorial Day for the past 15 years, was described . by advertising expert judges as "very complete and informational." The 4-page recreation guide which has repeatedly won honors in the past, is designed to fully inform visitors to Garfield County's two national parks, its new national , monument, and its three state parks about the scenic attractions and the . business services available in the area. , The News also took first place . for "Best In-House Advertising" for its special advertising feature "Business Directory Ad of the Week." Periodically, the News features one of its Business Directory Direc-tory advertisers in a larger, free ad. Advertising judges deemed it a " . ...good way to reward and reinforce your loyal advertisers..." The News was recognized for its writing skills when it received a cherished second place for "Best Editorial." Judges, publishers themselves, said about the News editorial on moving Garkane from Richfield, "Issues like this are of great importance to local communities communi-ties ... also written so that your stand is unmistakable." , A third place award for "Best . Front Page" and another for "Best Sports PageSection" rounded out the kudos for the small staff at the newspaper. ' The newspaper's publisher is ' Katie Thomas; editor is Nancy Twitchell; computer advertising technician, Rebecca Bales; and lay-but lay-but technician, Debby Urpani. "It's an office where everyone works together with overlapping skills to get the paper out each week," they 'agreed.
