Show Ryan Dastrup and Wayne Lewis District Spelling Winner Will Advance To State ESCALANTE The annual Garfield County School District Spelling Bee was held at Escalante Elementary on Friday, Feb. 16. Individual school winners from across the county were on hand to participate and compete for the opportunity to advance on to state level. Capturing first place and a lively trophy as well, was Marshall Thompson, 12, a seventh grader at Bryce Valley High School. Taking very close second and third places were Ryan Dastrup, 13, an 8th grader and Wayne Lewis, also 13, and a 7th grader, both at Panguitch Middle School. Thompson had taken the win at his local school level the previous week and both Lewis and Dastrup also won at their school. The three students had truly done their homework and it was neck and neck for a time. Thompson missed his word "fainncss" and Dastrup spelled it correctly. Then Dastrup missed his own word "producible" and the ball was back in Thompson's court. Thompson spelled producible and went on to spell the final word "constrictor" also correctly for the win. Assisting as pronouncer in the competition was Sharon Dale Marsh and as judges Helen Lyman and Analee Robinson. At the Panguitch Middle School the previous week, 33 students in the 7th and 8th grades qualified to participate in spelling bee competition. Again this year Earl Roe acted as announcer and Gloria Houston as judge. Lewis was awarded a champion certificate when he correctly spelled the word "echelon" that Dastrup had earlier missed and then went on to spell the word "lieu" correctly also. Marshall Thompson is a son of Joe and Trish Thompson of Cannonville; Ryan Dastrup is a son of Paul and Denise Dastrup of Panguitch and Wayne Lewis is a son of Bart Lewis and Mildred Jacobson of Panguitch: |
