A- .v j ' 1' t ' L DeAnn Brown, a nurse at Garfield Memorial Hospital, was on hand last Wednesday to demonstrate items used in her career at the Career Fair held at Bryce Valley Elementary. Career Fair At BVES Helps Students Plan Their Future ; TROPIC Bryce Valley Elementary Ele-mentary students enjoyed learning about different career opportunities last Tuesday and Wednesday when the school hosted a Career Fair. Guests from all over Garfield County were invited to share what they do for a living and told students stu-dents about the education they received re-ceived for their job, how important it was to learn math and reading skills, about the things they liked and disliked about their job and how much they were paid. Students met in the gymnasium and rotated from table to table to see their presentations. Stan Mecham, Tropic, talked to the students about being a farmer, cougar hunter, and cowboy. He showed seeds used for planting, photos, and other things used on his farm. Lowell Mecham, Tropic, talked about his long career of teaching and being a principal. He brought items he had received over the years while teaching at Bryce Valley. Erin Thomas, Tropic, spoke about being a teacher. Thomas is doing her student teaching at Bryce Valley and talked about what she experienced so far and presented some of the activites she teaches students. Shirley Barker, Henrieville, captivated cap-tivated the students with her wai-tressing wai-tressing adventures. She told them about different types of customers and explained how math and reading were important in her career. She showed they postcards, letter, placemats, and photos she had received re-ceived from her customers. Mary Stonaker, Cedar City, spoke of the education needed to be a dental hygenist. She talked about having to learn to give shots and fill teeth and told students how important im-portant it was for them to pay attention at-tention in school. Nellie Rae Mecham,. Tropic, showed a video and talked about being a banker. She showed the students money clips, coin holders, and talked about checking and sav ing accounts. Kim Keefe, Escalante, works for the forest service and showed slides and booklets about his job. Jean Seiler talked about his work as mayor of Tropic Town and working with the tourist industry. Kathy Gagurkey, Panguitch, is a lab technician at Garfield Memorial Memo-rial Hospital. She explained what was done in the lab and what was done with the results of the tests she took. Eric Packer helped students understand un-derstand how important accuracy is in hospitals and what could happen if mistakes were made. Packer is the hospital administrator at Garfield Gar-field Memorial. Diane Houston talked of how important a good diet is and what it has to do with her job as a dietician at Garfield Memorial Hospital. She explained how she helps patients plan their diet intelligently, which in turn helps them to recover more quickly. DeAnn Brown spoke about her career as a nurse and demonstrated giving "shots" on oranges and other things that are used in her profession. profes-sion. Dave Mecham, Bryce Canyon, talked about working with tourists at the national park, the animals, being a ranger, and security at the park. He explained the' many jobs . that people who work for the park service have. Lori Mecham, Tropic, demonstrated demon-strated some of the techniques she uses in being a beautician by having hav-ing the students give each other "perms." Alfred Foster, Tropic, brought his tow truck and demonstrated how uses the truck to tow cars and how he takes care of it. Ron Harris brought the fire truck and talked about how important impor-tant education was in being a fire fighter and and EMT. He demonstrated demon-strated what his does with the truck when there is a fire and how being an EMT is important to his fire fighting job. |
