Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Melvin and Florence Alvey were pleased to have their children home for the weekend to help with the potato and carrot harvest. Neuman and Lucinda Duncan, Cedar City, came with some of their children and Helen Pruit, from Richfield, brought part of her family, to join in the fun. Like the old timers used to say, "Many hands make light work." Klyn and Marlene Haws went to Tropic on the 18th for a surprise birthday party for their uncle, Malen Mecham. He has reached the 87 mark! Others in attendance were Jerry Mecham, Darrell Mecham and some of the kids from the PriceGreen River area. They said they didn't see any of the Escalante Mechams while passing through, but did get to visit with our cop. Wonder why? Others in attendance at the party were: Ivor and Elaine Riggs, Wallace and Marilyn Heap, Cedar City; Dunk and Alene Lar-sen, Lar-sen, Orem; Debbie Miller, Las Vegas Ve-gas and most of the Mecham and Shakespear families who live in and around Tropic. It was a nice party. Happy birthday to Malen. Betty R. Alvey hosted a birthday birth-day party for Clorene Vidrine at the Canyon Country Store on Oct. 15. A large group of her friends assembled assem-bled to wish her well. Freland Alvey was privileged to bless his great-granddaughter in LDS Sacrament meeting last Sunday. Sun-day. The baby's name is Kathryn Danniell Henderson. Her parents are Gene and Vicky Henderson of Elko, Nev. Her grandmother is Larane Reyes, Silver City, N.M. Her great-grandmother is Phyllis Alvey and great-great-grandmother is Elda Haws, who was able to attend at-tend the meeting not only for the blessing of the baby but also for the LDS mission farewell testimonial testimo-nial of her great-grandson, Ryan Cottam. Justin Marsh was the speaker at the LDS Single Adults monthly meeting last Sunday. Justin recently re-cently returned from an LDS mission mis-sion to Florida. Danny Duncan, Loa, came to help his great parents, Arnold and Deon Alvey get everything buttoned but-toned up for winter. He did a good job. Now they say "We can sit back, tap our toes and toast our shins the rest of the winter." John and Margaret Townsend recently re-cently returned from a trip to Washington Wash-ington state, where they visited with their children for a week or two. Kenneth and Marie Griffin went back to Provo, we thought for the winter, but they are back again! They wanted to do a few more things and visit with the Dave and Yoland Mclnelly family Vho are here from Mesa, Ariz, for the hunt. Would sincerely appreciate a call from all you other hunters before you go home, so I'll be able to get your names in the paper. Marlene Haws, Deon Alvey, Geraldine Liston, Lynn Griffin and DeLane Griffin were honored and privileged to be asked to sing in the funeral for Neal Magleby in Richfield. Rich-field. Neal has been a real friend to all of us in this area, along with his family. We will miss him. A number of other Escalante people attended the funeral. Also the one for Dewey Willis in Henrieville. Our condolences to both families. Condolences also to the family of Vernon Griffin who passed away last Thursday night. His wife, Hazel, Ha-zel, passed away only a short time (See ESCALANTE on page 7-A) ESCALANTE From Page 5-A ago. Condolences to the family of Mel Dutton who passed away last Thursday night also. His wife is the former Jean Haws, daughter of Elda and the late E.D. Haws. It looks like we might be going to have another grocery store in town soon. Lots of work and activity activ-ity going on inside the Munson's grocery store. So watch for the opening! Gene Griffin and Ron Brubaker went to Cedar City to play tennis in the Senior Games. Gene won his first game in the singles and they won one in the doubles. No big prizes they said. But at least they had the fun of doing it. That's great! The Sons of Utah Pioneers held their first dinner meeting for the winter months at the Senior Citizen Center last Thursday night. Bob Munson is currently the president of the group and in December, Jerry Roundy will step into that position. posi-tion. The group is presently working work-ing on some historic markers for the area. Don and Donna Zenz, along with two of the friends, flew into Sparks, Nev. last Saturday morning. morn-ing. They not only flew in, but they blew in, as the wind was really bad that day! They visited with Don's sister, Marjie Spencer. Lincoln Lin-coln and Alice Ann Lyman joined them on Saturday evening for din-. din-. ner and a good visit. They flew out again on Sunday. The deer hunters are starting to head for the hills. Included in Dean Gledhill's and Louie Bernardo's group are: Jimmy Taylor and Heath Spencer, Ogden; Jerry Taylor, Tay-lor, Alpine; Gary Gledhill, Ivins and Ben Venuti, St. George.
