Show Chase Shurtz ESCALANTE Chase Shurtz, 79, died, Mar. 18, 1997 at this home in Escalante from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He was born in Escalante on May 15, 1917 to Edwin Ray and Mary Alexie Roundy Shurtz. He married mar-ried Helen Zobeil Feb. 14, 1942 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Tem-ple. He was an active member of the LDS Church where he served as a missionary to the Northwestern Northwest-ern States mission, as bishop, stake president, high councilman, and ordinance worker in the St. George Temple. He worked as a civil engineer with UDOT until his retirement. He was "the smartest man in town." He is survived by his wife Helen, of Escalante; one son and four daughters: David Ray Shurtz, Troy, Mich.; Annette S. McCool, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Susan Su-san S. Wilson, Escalante; Marian S. Mills, Portland, Ore.; Sara S. Cowles, Casper, Wyo.; 20 grandchildren, grand-children, two great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters: Beryl Shurtz, Escalante; Doyle Clem L. McEwen PANGUITCH Clem L. McEwen, 85, of Panguitch, died Mar. 20, 1997 in St. George of natural causes. He was born in Panguitch on Aug. 16, 1911 to Edward Riley and Ellen Lovina LeFevre McEwen. He married Irene Houston on Sept. 7, 1938. The marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple Mar. 20, 1960. Clem attended elementary and high school in Panguitch. He worked at Bryce Canyon during high school. He attended LDS Business College. Clem was a World War II veteran. vet-eran. He was a prominent business busi-ness man and served on the city council for four years. He was a member of the Lion's Club. Clem was an entrepreneur and established estab-lished the Toggery Clothing Store, the Trail Lodge Motel, the Purple Sage Motel and the Sinclair Sin-clair self-service Station. He was also very involved in automobile sales, building offices, building cabins at Panguitch Lake, trucking, truck-ing, and real estate. Clem was' a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints and served as a counselor coun-selor in the Sunday School presidency presi-dency with Fenn E. Nelson. He is survived by his wife Irene; a son and a daughter: Clem (Geralyn) of St. George and Melanie (Ken) Olsen of St. George; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Brothers and sister-in-laws: J.L. and Fern Crawford, Frank and Cecile Or-ton, Or-ton, Sam and Mary Jo Houston, Ted and Christine Owens, Gene and Zelda Gerstner, Roene Nel- IMI Chase Shurtz Park, Bountiful; Vivian Collard, Bountiful; Betty Schow, Salt Lake City. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Mar. 22 at the Escalante Esca-lante LDS Ward Chapel. Burial was held at the Escalante Cemetery. Ceme-tery. Funeral directors Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield. Clem L. McEwen son, Opal Miller, Dorothy Houston, Hous-ton, Tennys Houston, Idella McEwen, and Dortha McEwen. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and five . sisters: Hortense (John) Excell, Nora Ann, Mathew, Douglas (Effie), Eugene (Florence), Bertha Ber-tha (Orion) Salisbury, Nettie (Errol) Dowdell, Homer, Wallace. Brother-in-laws: Reid Miller, Fenn E. Nelson, Jay Houston, Ray Houston, Dee Houston, Hoover Houston. Funeral services were held Monday, Mar. 24 at the Panguitch LDS Stake Center.
