' i jh- j. . m . 3 yi' mi; I" x- 'i. r- l". 4 - I: Postmasters Dennis Armstrong, Panguitch and Randy Stevens, Kanab kick off the "Legends of the West" Pony Express ride by presenting PANGUITCH The pony express rode again in Southern Utah to celebrate the debut of the Panguitch City Manager Allen Henrie with a framed sheet of new stamps and wishing luck to rider Steve Marshall Pony Express Rides Again In Panguitch "Legends of the West" stamps at Utah post offices October 18. As part of a national campaign, Panguitch was included to participate in a reenactment of the pony express mail delivery across Utha. This pony express left Panguitch on Tuesday and delivered Legends of the West postage stamps to cities all along the route including: Hatch, Glendale, Orderville, Mount Carmel and Kanab. Local horse club riders rose in the early morning hours to exercise their horses in preparauon for the historic reenactment. First rider Steve Marshall mounted his steed promptly at 9 a.m., secured the mail pouch to his saddle horn and rode off to cover the first mile of the event along US89 headed to Kanab. Marshall took a slight two-block detour to pass in front Panguitch Elementary school children who lined the street in front of their school to cheer the mock pony express rider on. . Marshall passed off the mail sack to his wife, Marilyn just over Roller Mill Hill and Marilyn, about a mile down the rode, handed off the pouch to Physician's Assistant Becky Roberts. Others who participated in the ride included Joe and Leniece Fischer and children Shannon and Erin; Gene and Roxi Roundy; Mike Owens, Clint and Kali Moore; Kevin Moore and sons Steven and Mitchell Moore; Brad Reeve; Maxi Miller, Joe and Lorena Decker, Heath and Teresa Hatch; Tom Hatch and John Yardley and son Luke Yardley. These Legends of the West stamps are the first in a new "Classic Collection" series featuring broadly defined, Americana-themed subjects. Sixteen individuals, including Jim Bridger, who was probably the first white man to see the Great Salt Lake, and four "themes" make up each of the 29-cent Legends of the West stamps. (See Pony Express Rides Again On Page 5A) Pony Express Rides Again From Page 1 "Some of the legends depicted on the stamps either made their homes in Utah or spent time here," said Panguitch Postmaster Dennis Armstrong. Featured on the stamps are: "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Jim Bridger, Annie Oakley, Chief Joseph, Bill Pickett, "Bat" Masterson, John Fremont, Wyatt Earp, Nellie Cashman, Charles Goodnight, Geronimo, Kit Carson, "Wild Bill" Hickok, Jim Beckwourth, Bill Tilghman, and Sacagawea. Four additional stamps honor Native American Culture, Western Wildlife, the Overland Mail and the American Cowboy. |
