Show Commissioner Participates in Risk Meeting Tom Hatch, chairman of the Garfield County Commission participated in a three-day Risk Management Institute at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater from June 20 - 22. He was joined by personnel from university institutes of government, risk mangers, and staff from state associations of cities and counties from across the nation. The 100 attendees received in depth training and orientation risk management in small local government. The risk management project, began in 1987 and funded by the W.K. Kellog Foundation, is being managed by the Extension Service, USDA in association with the Public Risk and Insurance Management Assoc. (PRIMA) and with the Cooperative Extension System. The project was developed in response to a liability crisis that continues to affect local government leadership and services particularly in smaller communities. Sovereign immunity no longer exists for local governments and jurisdictions arc increasingly exposed to a variety of risks in routine delivery of services such as parks and recreation, roads, law enforcement, sanitation, jails, and others. Concern over risk exposures inhabits the willingness of individuals to serve as local officials and to provide or expand certain services to citizens. |
