Garfield County News publisher Katie Thomas displays numerous awards captured by the News in the annual Better Newspaper Contest Garfield County News Nets Many Awards At Annual UPA Convention ST.GEORGE At last weekend's week-end's 102nd Utah Press Association Convention held at the Holiday Inn in St. George, the Garfield County News captured three first place plaques, four second place awards and one third place spot, second only to the Spanish fork Press which captured the coveted General Excellence plaque. The annual Belter Newspaper Contest is held each year at the association's as-sociation's winter convention where newspapers capturing the top spot must skip a year before being eligible eligi-ble again to compete. The Garfield County News took General Excellence Excel-lence in 1989 and again in 1992 and then was eligible to compete for 1994 in a category with other 20 weeklies, some with circulations up to 3,000. First place honors for Best News Photo went to News computer specialist spe-cialist and layout technician Rebecca Bales who also takes pictures pic-tures for the newspaper. Her triple entry of spectacular accident photos depicted three separate accidents at opposite ends of the county in mid- 4 sponsored by the Utah Press Association at the association's annual winter convention in St. George March 23-25. July, all taking place on July 13. The first showed an early morning 18-wheclcr accident in Hatch, the second a 10-wheeler dump truck accident at 10:30 a.m. at Calf Creek which killed the driver, and the third, where an accident in which the vehicle when the driver fell asleep at the wheel in mid-afternoon, sending his passenger to the hospital with head injuries. Bales gleaned a rare 100 points from the judges for her cross-county cross-county efforts to cover news that July day. The judge's comment (for quality, layout and creativity), "100 says it all!" The Garfield County News also took first place for a photo taken by Harriet Priska who covers Escalante . Her photo taken in June at the Wide Hollow Fishing Derby of six-year-old Zack Orton in his wide-brimmed wide-brimmed hat, with his whimsical smile and prize-winning fish captured cap-tured the hearts of the judges. The Garfield County News annual an-nual Brycc Canyon Country recreation recre-ation guide captured the top spot again for Best Special Section. The recreation guide has taken first place numerous times since its first publication more than 10 years ago. Area businesses are currently signing sign-ing up for ads in the prize-winning publication. Second place honors were for Best News Story (coverage of the assault of Turnabout Ranch coun-. selors in August), Best News Series (death ofaa 16-year-old atNorthstar, and followups), Best Sports Photo (Bryce Valley vs. Panguitch in basketball), bas-ketball), and a third place for Best Lifestyle Page. Speakers at the convention included in-cluded Senator Robert F. Bennett (R-Utah); Senator Lyle Hilyard, assistant majority whip, Utah State Senate; and Tim Williams, president, presi-dent, Williams and Rockwood. The three-day convention which began with a board meeting on Thursday night, March 23, included a variety of special seminars throughout the day on Friday and Saturday and concluded with the Saturday night awards banquet.
