The fast-moving fire on the north side of the highway burned some 20 acres in about as many minutes Thursday afternoon as firefighters from the Powell District, Dis-trict, Dixie National Forest, Bryce Canyon National Park, Rubys Inn, and Tropic Fire Department could bring the blaze under control. A tanker plane dropped water at one point, called from the nearby Uintah Flats fire where mopup from last week's extensive fire near Hatch was taking place. At one point, winds at the fire snapped at 52 mph with flames leaping close to 100 feet high. Said All Foster, "We saw the lightning hit, and in less than five minutes, the flames had spread 30 feet." Lightning had also struck the water pump at Foster's knocking it out, but water from tanker trucks and a special load from the Tropic Fire Department saved the day, said Foster. The flames did not jump the East Fork of the Sevier River and a wind shift carried the flames in a northwesterly direction, reversing them from their original path. Guests, family members, employees em-ployees and others at the Foster compound were told to get ready to evacuate before the shift in wind. There are a large general store, gas station, restaurant, motel, three homes, and several other structures that make up the complex. |
