The intrepid adventurer who learned to ride two years ago, says she'll fly to Hawaii and rent a motorcycle to cap off her trip. She'll Ride Her Harley Through 50 States To Celebrate Her 50th PANGUITCH A Portland, Oregon woman with a genuine sense of adventure is celebrating her 50th birthday by touring all 50 states on her motorcycle. Youthful and attractive Carolyn Fox will turn 50 on July 8, somewhere between Bryce Canyon and the East coast. Her long auburn tresses flying in the wind as she talked, the intrepid lady said she has taken three months off from her career as an attorney, closed her office, and is on her way to achieving her goal. She stopped briefly at the KOA campground in Panguitch with plans to see Bryce Canyon National Park before leaving Utah for Colorado. Col-orado. "Life is short," she said, "and if my journey is making any statement, it is 'don't be afraid to try new things.'" Reared in Winston, Ore., the (See She'll Ride Her Harley on Page 4A) She'll Ride Her Harley From Page 1 spunky, smiling mother of two grown sons believes in doing what she says. She has worked at a variety vari-ety of jobs in the past. She has been a social services caseworker, a policewoman, in day care and in real estate. She graduated in 1966 from the University of Oregon with a bachelor bache-lor of science degree and, in 1985 at age 40, entered Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark in Portland where she spent three years earning her doctor of juris prudence. She was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1989. She took some Indian law classes, and was admitted to practice on the reservation of the Confederate Tribes of Warm Springs in Madres, Ore. She is an enrolled member of the Cowlitz tribe of Oregon. She practiced on the reservation for two years before opening her downtown Portland law offices. After a friend took her on a motorcycle mo-torcycle ride three years ago, she was hooked, and has been riding on her own for a little over two years. She enrolled in a motorcycle course at night school where she received eight hours in class instruction and 10 hours of practical hands-on learning. She said that 95 percent of learning to ride "was not fun" but she was "absolutely determined to do it" Fox is traveling on her 1989 Springer Softail Harley Davidson. The bikes are heavy and can be intimidating in-timidating to a novice rider. "If you intend to take it up," she said, "be prepared to put in some time and some hard work." She rode 12,000 miles last year preparing for the trip of her dreams. "Bikes are 'hot items' right now," she said, "and appreciate in ' value very well." They cost anywhere any-where from $7,000 to $20,000. This is her third bike, she said and she "hasn't lost money on one yet." Fox wears a full helmet in states where they are required and a smaller, less restrictive one at other times. Her greatest problem on this trip, she said, has been dealing with the heavy, unrelenting winds that make her very vulnerable in traffic. She travels about 250-300 miles a day. She left Portland on June 5 to spend a few days with her family at Roscburg, Ore. before getting a serious start on her itinerary on June 13. "I love the freedom in riding," Fox said, and she has found the people she's met along the way "delightful." She is partly sponsored spon-sored by KOA, so she is staying in their camps throughout her trip. Even with their help, she expects the trip will cost about $5,000. In the west, her journey will include in-clude Yosemite National Park in northern California; Death Valley in southern California; Las Vegas, Nev.; Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon National Parks. After Colorado, she will head see Kansas and Oklahoma and the southern route to the east coast. She will return re-turn via the northern route to Oregon Ore-gon and top off her trip with a visit to Hawaii by plane where she will tour by motorcycle. Video tapes of her journey are sent to her sons in Oregon for safekeeping safe-keeping and to provide an accurate record for a book she plans to write about her adventure when it is all over. Not one ever to be bound to uniformity, uni-formity, she said she may even change careers again. |
