Plans were initiated at a Garfield County Travel Council meeting for "traveling billboards" advertising the merits of Garfield County via 18-wheelers. 18-wheelers. The county is looking into joint - advertising with Kane County for murals to be painted on trailers at $3,200 per trailer and $100 a month maintenance. Barbara Corliss, . council member, indicated that she had successfully contacted a trucking firm willing to work with the two counties. The county is considering, with Kane County J participation, contracting for two trucks for the traveling billboards. Council member Rosalea Caldwell told the council that Green Thumb monies may once again be available to help with costs of information booths. She said that Green Thumb monies coupled with Travel Council funds may enable information booth were not available and are scheduled for the next travel council meeting. The travel council has not been successful to date in locating a portable facility that could be used or converted to a portable information in-formation booth. Members of the Travel Council met with representatives of the Cedar City District Forest Service office regarding signing at Panguitch Lake. Representing the Travel Council were Bob Benfield and John Houston. " Houston told the council that both the Travel Writers and the French Travel Agent FAM (Familiarization) (Familiariza-tion) Tours were successful. Council member Bill Herder suggested contacting bicycle tour companies about stopping in Panguitch. He promised to check with several companies and to report back to the council. Travel posters available from the Utah Travel Council were displayed for council members. Council members worked on updating the Garfield County Calendar of Events for 1987. Council member Rod Syrett will again chair the 1987 Bryce Canyon Cross Country Ski Race and Winter Festival set for February 16. Copies of the Color Country winter brochure were distributed to council members. Reed Munson who is contracting the operation said the rolling base will allow them to finish the job before their scheduled completion date. Garfield, Kane To Join In Promotion A high school class on tourism planned for this year will not be scheduled. The new superintendent of schools had not been informed of the class and it was not settled into the curriculum. Council member Wayne Ross will meet with Supt. Jerold Judd to discuss including the (See PROMOTION Page 3) Promotion class in next year's curriculum. Herder said that since both the 1985 and 1986 Panguitch Lake Shore Festivals had ended up in the red, he would willingly help again in 1987, but would not be able to personally bear any potential losses of the festival as he had in the past. There was discussion of the Panguitch Chamber of Commerce and the Travel Council jointly sharing responsibility for the activity. The council will seek participation of tlje, Panguitch Lake Resort in future activities. ' i Corliss outlined plans for next year's Fiddler's Association contest. She also read a thank-you letter she had received from the National Fiddlers Association. ' " I Council members discussed transient room tax reports. Copies of the report will be given Barbara Corliss, Rod Syrett, Rosalea Caldwell and John Houston to review. They will notify County Clerk Hazel Houston if any motels or RV parks are not listed on the report. Corliss asked Mrs. Houston to draft and audit letter to the motels and RV parks requesting verification that taxes had been paid. Mrs. Houston was also asked to find out the cost of a full page ad in the State Fair Book and to let the council know at its next meeting. Council members were asked by chairman Bob Benfield to suggest ways to promote frontier history through programs, brochures, and museums. Rosalea Caldwell will check with possible donors in Escalante for museum contributions of historical objects and Wayne Ross will check in Sanpete County to see how the county went about setting up its museum. The council asked Rod Syrett to invite Connie Allen to present her slide collection for the next travel council meeting. Bruce Fullmer was selected to attended the Phoenix Ski Show to represent the Travel Council. Promotional material was provided for the November show. Lynn Lamb was selected to handle the county's tourism correspondence. correspon-dence. She was asked to log the time spent on correspondence. Fullmer presented a brief budget review to the council. He said he anticipated a budget of between $100,000 and $110,000 for 1987 with details to be presented at the following meeting. |
