Show Garfield Students Invited to Enter Energy Contest Students in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades in southern Utah are Invited to enter the fifth annual Alternate Energy Contest sponsored by the Telluride Region of Utah Power and Light Company. Brad Whittaker is directing preparation for the contest locally this year. Students are invited to enter the contest with projects that focus on energy sourses. Geothermal energy application, solar-energy space station, wood burning stove efficiency research and laser-produced steam generation are examples of past contest entries. "The object of the contest Is to encourage conservation of conventional energy through the utilization of alternate energy sources," Mr. Whittaker said. "Utah Power encourages development of alternate renewable energy systems such as solar, geothermal, wind, low-head hydro and garbage." "It is Important for students to explore new Ideas through research, experimentation and projects design," said Margaret Oler, regional contest coordinator. "The contest students are asked to explain their project to a panel of judges and respond to judges' questions." Every student who enters the contest receives a certificate for participation as well as a Contest T-shirt. First, second and third place winners will be chosen on each grade level and will receive $75, $50 and $25 cash prizes as well as trophies and ribbons. A grand prize winner will receive a $100 cash prize, trophy and ribbon. Deadline for entering the contest is February 1, 1986. Judging of the entries will take place in local areas during March, 1986. Booklets explaining the contest, listing the rules and containing entry blanks are available from Mr. Whittaker at the Kanab Utah Power and Light office, 120 East 100 South, Kanab, Utah, 644-2410. Information is also available from area science teachers. |
