Show Escalante High School's eighth grade volleyball team took first place in a recent tournament. Coach Madlyn Haws stands beside her team, Mary One of the major items of concern at a meeting of the Garfield County Commission meeting was a piece of contested property in John's Valley near Widtsoe. The land in question is being involved in a swap with the state trading state for private land. Joseph Steed of John's Valley and Doyle Cottam of Escalante have both filed on the land. Since there are two filings, the matter must go before a state board and the lands in question will then go up for bid. Russ Walters, a land owner east of Hatch has asked the commission to repair a road to his property. So much water is coming through the wash that he can't get his cattle through. At this time the county does not have a culvert large enough to handle the water flow. Letters written for the commission to Senators Orrin Hatch and Jake Garn, Representative James V. Hansen and Governor Norman Bangerter requested their help in support for the uranium industry. A public hearing held in Panguitch reaffirmed the commission's commitment to keep the Panguitch Lake Road free of snow this winter from the ranger station to Beaver Dam Lodge. Milbank Insurance Company's representatives Jim Yardley and John Yardley came to the commissioners to explain the premium raise for the blanket policy for the county employees. The commission feels that at this time the county cannot afford the increase and will seek coverage with Utah Local Jane Crawford, Candence Haws, Kim Woolsey, Amy Humphreys, Ann Olsen, JoAnn Woolsey and Marcie Griffin. Team Is one of best In region. Commission Mulls Property Issue During Regular Meet Government Trust, Kent Wintch reported that the Community Center in Ticaboo is completed. Wintch resigned effective Nov. 15. County road supervisor Ron Greenhalgh reported that the streets in Antimony, Tropic, and Can-nonville have been completed. The towns furnished chips and asphalt and the county furnished labor and equipment. John Williams, executive director of the Five County Association of Governments, has been asked by the commissioners to rewrite policies and procedures on the county's pay system. |
