Show Emergency Medical Technician Betty Frandsen closes ambulance door on Vickl Collard during in- BRYCE Teams of Emergency Medical Technicians from Vernal, American Fork, Monroe, Richfield, Piute County' and Kanab joined two teams from Panguitch and teams from Bryce, Bryce Valley and Escalante at the Second Annual EMT Olympics held Saturday at Rubys Inn. The three-member teams competed in a series of challenging contests which were scored on a point system. Garnering the most points for first place was the Monroe team which took home $150 and in second place were members of the Bryce Valley team who won $125. The third place team, Richfield, showed up one member short when a team member took ill and Neil Foster, Bryce substituted. The team won $100. Prizes of $75 went to Escalante for fourth place and $50 to Kanab for fifth. Coordinator Bob McCullough, Garfield County EMT operations officer, who arranged the event said competition was even keener and fant resuscitation time trial at EMT Olympics held Saturday at Ruby's Inn. Karen Uber, Utah State Basic Life Support Coordinator, evaluated one series of problem challenges for competing EMT teams. Bob Tuckett and Albert Orton, Iron County. Ambulance Service, also evaluated problem situations set up to test the teams. Local evaluators were Joe Thompson, Olva Munson, Sandrea Francisco, Karleen Muir, George Buckingham, Judy Buckingham, Otto Bulkley, Jake Bagnell and Sheldon. Jackson. State personnel were complimentary about the day-long series of events designed to test the skills of EMTs and help them assess their own strengths and weaknesses. Uber suggested promoting the Olympics for next year in the official bulletin of Emergency Medical Services. Returning squads from last year's Olympics were teams from Kanab and Piute County. All squads were excited about the day's event and have promised a return for next year's Olympics. The day was planned as a family outing for EMTs and their families'., There were special childrens' activities which took place while parents were occupied with contests. Children were also involved in bandaging contests, a "ventilation" contest (blowing up balloons), an (See OLYMPICS Page 4) Olympics mmmmmm "ambulance" race with wagons and other special activities. Families enjoyed a picnic dinner followed by an EMT "Tall Tales" contest. Tying for honors a best tellers of tall EMT tales were Kevin Jackson, Vernal and Pat Lutes, Cannonville. Many events were videotaped for later critiquing and for future promotion of the Olympics. McCullough estimated that more than 400 volunteer hours of preparation went into planning and preparation for Saturday's competition. He gave much credit to on-site coordinators Karleen Muir and Samlrea Francisco for success of the Olympics. The day's activities were capped off with a fund raising dance at Bryce Valley High School in Tropic. |
