Show Bryce Valley Shocks Piute uy John Yardley If you are ranked number one in 1A basketball in the state of Utah, don't go to Tropic. The Bryce Valley Mustangs played an excellent ball game in defeating top ranked Piute 74-73 last week. This was the second time a number one team came to play the Mustangs and just as the Beaver Beavers found out a little over a month ago, the green and white wave is death on their home court. Led by the balanced scoring of Richard Ott with 23, George Thomrjson with 12 and WaHe Ramsay with 18, the Clare Ramsay-coached Mustangs led by as many as nine in the final period before ending up on top by a point. The last basket by Piute was actually uncontested. Troy Goulding did his usual fine job of directing the offensive and Dallin Baugh rebounded well and ,played terrific defense. Scott Chynoweth did a credible job off the fbench. , , The win secures the Mustangs a -.,4 solid hold on second place in the division behind Piute who were handed only their first league loss. This week Bryce Valley traveled to Escalante to face the Moquis. This one was a well played game by both teams, but the fire power of the Mustangs proved to be too much on their home floor against the big and talented T-Birds. It would not be impossible to see these same two teams collide in the finals of the Region 12 Round Robin in three weeks at Kanab. In other action for county basketball, the Panguitch Bobcats won an important game for themselves with a 68-62 won over North Sevier at Salina. The win for coach Brian McAllister's Bobcats pretty well locks up fourth place in the division with only one game remaining for them to be played at home against Gunnison on February 22. Panguitch was-led by the scoring of Kris Barney who had a great second half to finish with 22. Nate Brinkerhoff fired in 20 and Jody Davis tanked 18 to lead the double figure scoring for the Bobcats. Panguitch led by 30-27 at half and 50-45 at the end of three before playing nearly even in the final period to finish 68-62. Heath Sartini, Earl Jolley and Scott Simkins, who started" for the ill Lawrence Orton, . all played well for Panguitch in the winning cause. Escalante traveled to Wayne County where they actually took a 21-19 half time lead before falling 62-49. "We had a terrible lapse at the end of the third quarter and at the beginning of the fourth that really killed us," lamented head coach Jim Smith. "After that, we just were unable to get back, being put into a position where we had to foul." The Badgers hit an amazing 15 of 17 free throws in the final quarter to fend off the Moqui challenge to get back into the game. Coach Ralph Riggs' team held tough behind the scoring of Ids own son Bill who had 16 and Glassmeyer who hit for 15 on the night, 'For the Moquis, the consistent twosome of Dirk Durfey and Clint' Porter ripped the nets for 17 apiece 4 Both have been playing . excellent basketball of late. . . In other local basketball news, Kanab won first in the sophomore division and Valley first In, the ninth grade division during a Friday, and Saturday tournament in panguitch. The host Panguitch teams finished second in both divisions. In Panguitch Bantams, Clint-. y ,v Barney scored a whopping 44 points for the Lakers team. Clint, just an eighth grader, was like radar from the outside. I don't care what league you are in, 44 is a bunch of points. Great game, Clint! Nationally, BYU was "Euwing-ized" as Georgetown placed the Cougars on nation-wide television. Devin Durrant, the nation's leading scorer going in with 30.4 per game, was held to only 13 points. The Cougars better stay west of the Mississippi where they can do things I like hold on for a win against Utah 82-79, as they did last week as well. This Saturday on regional TV, BYU plays Notre Dame at Provo. The last time the two teams met was in the Eastern Regionals in 1981 when Danny Ainge made the "shot heard around the world" for a last second win for BYU. The University of Utah plays on television tonight, against Hawaii after a near-miracle comeback at BYU last Wednesday. The game can be seen on Channel Two at 9 p.m. |
