Show Council Sets Bryce 'Rim Run' Members of the Garfield County Advertising Council discussed plans for the county's first "Bryce Canyon Rim Run", scheduled for Bryce on August 25. Marv Bell, advertising specialist with Creative Marketing Directions, Murray, attended last Thursday's meeting at Ruby's Inn to update council members on the status of plans for the run. w Bell had suggested the run to promote visitation and interest in the Garfield County area and, after receiving the go ahead from the council, approached people he knew who promote more than 20 races annually to assist in promoting the "Bryce Canyon Rim Run." Bell showed Council members a copy of an ad promoting the run in the annual Utah Race and Marathon booklet. Promoters Rick Joseph and Doug Beck will make two trips to the race site to map out the race and clock actual distance which is expected to be about six miles. Bell will assist the council in designing race registration forms and flyers which will be distributed by the promoters 'to various Utah shoe stores catering to racers. They will also be distributed at other racing events over the next six months to attract as many participants as possible. Council members will gather prizes, incentives for race entrants and possibly plan a post party for participants and their families. Their promoters will handle all electronic equipment used for timing the race which is expected to generate interest throughout the state. The Ad Council granted exclusive radio rights to station KBRE in Cedar City in exchange for promotion. KBRE will sell radio advertising to local businesses also.. George Buckingham, represen- ting Bryce Canyon National Park, told council members that approval would be needed for the run from park officials. He said a permit would have to be granted after ascertaining that the event would not adversely impact park visitation and that certain ground rules would need to be set up. Promoters will contact park officials at an early date to clear up any necessary details since promotion has already begun on the race. The jeep posses will be asked to assist during the race. In other business the Ad Council also listened to several samples of 60 second radio spots designed to promote winter recreation in Garfield County. The council approved spots which described snowshoeing at Bryce Canyon National Park, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, Panguitch lake ice fishing and other activities. The spots also emphasized that roads are open during the winter connecting Panguitch Lake and Brian Head and in Bryce Canyon National Park. The council approved expenditures of $7,000 for the winter advertising campaign made up of $5,000 of the council's funds and $2,000 in matching funds from Color Country Advertising Council. The radio spots will be aired In Provo, Richfield, St. George, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
