Show Cannonville Man Wins Football Score Contest By John Yardley Steve Clark of Cannonville was a perfect eight for eight in selecting winners in last week's contest and only missed predicting the Utah-Hawaii final by one point. The former Bryce Valley High basketball star selected Hawaii 21 and Utah 17. The final was 20-17. Great Work, Steve! Steve wasn't the only "perfect picker" this week. Clint Barney, Bev. Lowe, Brian McAllister, and Berdell Barton also qualified for the drawing for the big prize by selecting all winners. This week, we also had a new twist. One team that actually lost was the winner. Dixie lost 6-0 to Weber State J.V., but the Wildcats had to forfeit to Dixie due to a technicality on league officials. This next week, you can try your luck on a couple more professional games. The high schools are in the state playoffs and we cannot determine two weeks in advance who the match-ups will be. In other news from the world of sports, former BYU quarterbacks had a great weekend. Marc Wilson tossed five touchdown passes as the Raiders held on to defeat San Diego 44-37. Jim McMahon flipped three scoring passes as the. Bears won easily. Danny White was summoned off the Dallas bench where he has been kept of late, to throw for three td's in the second half and lead Dallas to a come-from-behind overtime victory 30-27 over New Orleans. It was only justice for the talented White. Relegated to being the punter, Danny has given Dallas fans across the country a great many thrillls. Although White may not have the "rocket arm", he is smart and plays intelligently. If he is not reinstated as the starter after Sunday's showing, Tom Landry needs to have his bald head examined, in this writer's opinion. Dan Marino threw for a couple more touchdowns Sunday to lead Miami to another win. The Dolphins are the only undefeated team in the NFL. Former Bingham High all- Steve Clark around, Bruce Hardy, caught a Marino pass last week for a score. Finally, the NBA begins play this week. Last Tuesday the Celtics and Jazz hooked up in the annual Hall of Fame game. With the trade of Gerald Henderson by the Celtics, Danny Ainge has stepped in as the starting guard opposite Dennis Johnson. For the Jazz, Adrian Dantley has still not reported and I seriously doubt things can ever be the same in Salt Lake for A.D. Too many bridges have been burned in the battle between him and general manager-coach Frank Layden. |
