Show Dear Vi: You can cut one long shoe horn out of each side of a plastic liquid detergent bottle: Cut a cardboard pattern and trace it on the bottle. Have the narrow part at the top and the wide (heel) part extending onto the bottom of the bottle a fraction of an inch to make a little shelf for the bottom of the heel. After the initial cut, smooth any rough edges that might snag hosiery. Punch a hole In the top and decorate as desired, using permanent marking pens or acrylic paint. I like these plastic shoe horns better than the tall ones you buy because they are wider and not too thick, thus easier to use. Emily Quinn, Hurricane, Utah Dear Vi: My hint is for mothers with small children. Youngsters do not like different foods mixed together or even touching, so we use divided plastic plates. Each section is like a small dish, yet the child feels that he has a "grown-up" plate. One plate is also easier to wash than several small ones. This idea is especially useful when serving dishes with sauces, or vegetables or fruits with juiuces that might run into other foods on the plate. Enid Wcstover, Sal ina, Utah Dear Vi: Since each variety of houseplant needs its own fertilizing and watering schedule, I use a ball-point pen to mark plastic clips from loaves of bread with the date each treatment is needed. Clip the marks on the plants or lay them on top of the soil. They can be reused just by rubbing off the previous instructions with a damp cloth. Mrs. T. Miller, Evanston, Wyo. Dear Vi: When I am going to need ice cubes for a party, I make them ahead and store them in a double brown bag instead of plastic. This keeps them from freezing together, I suppose because the brown bag absorbs any excess moisture. Anyway, it works, and the ice seems to keep longer and better. LlzScranton, Evanston, Wyoming Dear Vi: I have found something that is really helping my dry skin. Every morning I apply odorless castor oil to my face, and neck, working it around, up and out thoroughly with my finger tips. Then I do some exercise, bending down, head and arms dangling toward the floor, while swaying from side to side. I also do some bounces and take deep breaths before an open window. Finally, I apply chilled witch hazel with a wad of cotton. In addition, once a week I mix avocado oil with skin milk powder and give myself a facial with this mixture while resting with my feet elevated. After removing the mask with warm water, I use chilled witch hazel again. At night I put castor oil around my eyes to help prevent the sunburst wrinkles that always want to form there. These helps are inexpensive and they seem to be working wonderfully well for me. A Faithful Reader, Payson, Utah Dear VI: If you have an extra wall calendar and small children in your family, gather them around you and let them help make a wonderful New Year or birthday gift for a grandparent. Glue pictures the children have painted over the pictures facing each month in the calendar, then mark all the special days throughout the year birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, vacation dates, etc. with little drawings or decorative stickers. Add little endearments, such as "I love my grandma," "We're thinking of you today," "You're the best grandpa in the world," etc., here and there. What grandparent wouldn't be thrilled with such a personalized igft. Susan and Bill Squires and Family, Logan, Utah Readers: We cherish all your good ideas. Send yours to IT MAKES CENTS, P.O.
