Show Escalante 4-H Clubs Get Feeling For Motto Through Varied Events ESCALANTE The Head-Hart-Hands-Health 4-H motto took on a special and significant meaning for the many youngsters involved in the ten Escalante clubs this summer, ranging from clowning to cooking. For six years, instructor Sue Mosler has nurturted a group of girls through the beginning stitches of a sewing club to the advanced seamstress stage. Members Vickie ; Crawford, Melanie Griffin, Paula Leibenguth and Michelle Simons, are working independently on their individual sewing projects after making an out-of-town trip to purchase fabric. Clowning was the choice of leader Lucille Cowles' 4-H group consisting of Sean, Leanie and Trina Leavitt, Ronald Cowles, Jason Winn, Jay Hales and Donna Cowles. Rodeo clowns Myron and Jeff Carter demonstrated techniques of en-tertaning and the members experimented with make-up, routines, and made their own costumes. They marched in the Days of '47 parade. Four girls, Vickie Crawford, Melanie Griffin, Tyra Johnson and Michelle Simons were involved in a cake decorating class instructed by Joy Carter. After learning how to make a frosting bag and ex perimenting with different tubes, girls made a rabbit cake and then they each decorated a two-layer cake which was donated to the cake walk for the July 24th celebration. The Crazy Cookie Cookers was the name chosen by a group for first year indoor cooking students including Mary Jane Crawford, Kimberly Woolsey, Kelly Griffin, Kimberly Grade, Patricia Barney, Marcie Griffin, Amy and Ellie Humpheries. Their student leaders were Melanie Griffin and Vickie Crawford who helped the girls make cookies, brownies, relish trays, sandwiches and drinks. Members of Carol Simons' beginning quilting class practiced by tying a baby quilt. Those participating were Melissa Hawks, Christine Gledhill, Tyra Johnson, Becky Mitchell, Lisa Leibenguth (who also made a double-size quilt for her own bed) and Michelle Simons. Six boys took on the challenge of an indoor cooking class under the supervision of leader Sandra Cooper. Calling themselves the Crazy Chefs, Forrest Christian, Ronald Cowles, Jay Hales, Scott Edmiston, Todd Meacham and Matt Simons learned about comparative shopping, clean kitchen habits and other cooking basics before preparing desserts, drinks, and sandwiches. They will enter cookies in the county fair. Victory Crawford was the instructor for a second year sewing class, The Seven Girls, Marcie Griffin, Emily Lott, Amy and Ellie Humphries, Mary Jane Crawford, Patricia Barney and Kimberly The Escalante 4-H Kiders receive instruction from leader Dianne Alvey. The girls learned basic Woolsey made swimsuit and school bags, skirts, dresses and pants, and will each display two clothing articles at the fair. Hobo dinners, minipizzas, baked apples and s'mores were among some of the outdoor cooking treats prepared by the Buddy Burners. Michelle Simons was the teen leader for this 4-H group including Troy and Melissa Hawkes, Forest Christian, Lisa Leibenguth, Megan Venuita, Kimberly Woolsey, Jay Hales, Marcie Griffin, Patricia horsemanship and went on several trail rides and participated in competitive events. Barney and Mathew Simons. Lana Christian, adult leader for a crocheting class, will be teaching the techniques to Helena Spencer, Wendy and Marcie Griffin, Megan Venuti, Patricia Barney, Michell Simons, Lisa Leibenguth, Kimberly Woolsey, Amy and Ellie Humphries. Because they are starting late, the club has agreed to continue throughout the school year and is presently working on trivets made from the basic chain stitch and single crochet. The seven equestriennes In the 4-H Riders club learned the basics of good horsemanship and achieved the Tenderfoot rank. Rhonda Griffin, Christine Gledhill, Melissa Hawks, Emily Lott, Julie 'Carter, Christine Bayles and Trisha Coughlin applied their knowledge on several trail rides including an overnight camping trip. They also competed in barrel racing and presented a parade drill routine during Pioneers Days. Their leader was Dianne Alvey, assisted by Dennis and Pauline Lott. |
