Show 'Messiah' Presentation Slated Sunday in Manti On Sunday, December 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Manti First-Second Ward chapel, the 49th consecutive annual presentation of Handel's "Messiah" will take place. Participants will include a 100 voice choir made up of Snow College students, county and Utah residents, an orchestra of 35 members and 10 soloists. Soloists include Boyd Gobie, tenor; Montel Green, bass; Susan Ericksen, contralto; Lily Jane Miller, soprano; Kay Willardson, soprano; Bertha Anderson, contralto; Judy Morgan, soprano; Barbara Barton, soprano; David Willmore, bass and Melba Armstrong, soprano. , The presentation will be conducted by McLoyd Ericksen with' Judy Morgan of the Snow College music staff as assistant director. Harry Dean, director emeritus, who produced the first Messiah in Ephraim in 1934 will lead the choir, orchestra, and congregation in the Hallelujah Chorus. Dennis Hansen, music department chairman, is the orchestra director and Ardith Peterson, Norma Olson, and Lisa Hone provide the keyboard accompaniment, The Messiah was composed by George Fre.deric Handel, who was born February 23, 1685 in Halle, Germany. Handel spent 50 years in England. His music shows influences from Italy and France. As a result he represents an international figure in music. The climax of Handel's life came in 1742 when he conducted his first performance of the Messiah. When performed, it immediately became a huge success. During the last years of his life Handel became nearly blind, but he continued to conduct performances and compose until his death in 1759. |
