Show Salt Lake Papers Name All-State Cage Teams With the conclusion of what has seemed a successful basketball season countywlde for area high school teams, yet another honor has been added to six individual team members for their sports efforts in basketball this year. Since 1906 the Deseret News publication based in Salt Lake City has annually selected what players they perceived were worthy to be dubbed members of an all-state basketball team. There were 24 players from throughout the state that comprised the first team all-state selections (five In each of the four classes) with Panguitch High School player Donny Leach counted in among this first string. The Deseret News hailed the players as this year's finest prep players. Cited also among some 20 players to be honored were Frank Alvey, Escalante; Dale Orton, Panguitch; Mike Baldwin, Panguitch; Rick Robison, Panguitch; and Roland Johnson, Bryce Valley. It was noted that in recent years selecting of All-State recipients has been left up to statewide basketball coaches. Nearly all of Utah's 86 high school basketball coaches participated in this year's selection. Similary the Salt Lake Tribune honored Donny Leach as Class 1-A Utah All-Stater. Selected also by the Tribune as Class 1-A second-team selections were Dale Orton, Panguitch; and Frank Alvey, Escalante. With weather giving just about everyone a fit Panguitch High School track team members probably thought they would be taking it easy for a few days indoors. Much to their dismay coach Kay Englested has a rigorous program lined up of jogging, sprints and "bounding" being demonstrated by the entire class. |
