Show 46 300 b SLC, 'JT 841 1 1 4 Garfield Sterling Scholars Ready Region Competition Apru 15 Six seniors from Escalante, Bryce Valley and Panguitch high schools will represent Garfield County School District in the final Judging at Southern Utah State College on April 15. In the fourth year of the Southeast Utah Sterling Scholar Program, the five will be among 93 finalists competing in 12 educational categories of competition for substantial cash awards. Senior students from high schools in Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington school districts have been selected to represent their schools as Sterling Scholar finalists. Each finalist will receive an embossed Sterling Scholar Certificate. Garfield County students par-ticipating are: Panguitch High School, David Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Harris, visual arts; Mike Baldwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Baldwin, vocational education and Kathy Yardley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Yardley, general scholarship. Bryce Valley, Marilyn Ott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Ott, English and Literature. Escalante, Tracy Mitchell, son of Mr. 'and Mrs. Theron Mitchell, business education and John Bayles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Bayles, general scholarship. A winner and two runners-up will be chosen from each category. Each winner will receive a $200 cash award, and each runner-up $100 cash award. Each winner and runner-up will receive a Sterling Scholar pin. There has been excellent participation in the program in the south west part of the state. The first year of operating the program in 1979, eight high schools participated with 52 finalsits; the second year there were nine high schools and 82 finalists and the third year there were 11 high schools and 96 finalists. This year there will be 11 high schools with 93 finalists. In addition, most colleges and universities in Utah have offered full tuition scholarships to winners with most of them offering half-tuition scholarships to runners-up. The purpose of the Sterling Scholar Program is to reward students for excellence and outstanding achievement in the academic, vocational and fine arts areas. Judges for the competition will come from local communities, the Utah State Office of Education, Dixie College and Southern Utah State College. |
