Show Hunting Dates Set By Big Game Board The 1981 big game hunting seasons have been set by the Utah Board of Big Game Control. The general deer season will be October 17-27. Fourteen units in southern Utah have a seven-day season, October 17-23. The Beaver, and the North Boulder units have been added to those areas restricted to a seven-day season in 1980. Units which continue to have a seven-day season are the LaSal Henry Mountains, Parowan, West Zion, East Zion, Kaiparowits, Dixie-West Pine Valley and Dixie-Terry-Ox Valley. These units are closed to deer hunting during the archery and muzzle-loader seasons. The purpose of the seven-day hunts is to reduce hunting pressure in southern Utah, where deer populations have been low. As in 1980, three units in southern Utah are closed to all deer hunting during the general season, archery season and muzzle-loader season. These are San Juan-Elk Ridge, Paunsaugunt portion of Unit 60 and Dixie-East Pine Valley. In northern Utah, where deer populations are high, 15,000 anterless permits were authorized for the regular season, postseason and five-day notice. The deer archery season will be August 22 through September 7. As in 1980, persons with a deer archery permit will be allowed to take two buck deer, one during the archery season and one during the regular rifle season, or two during the archery season with archery tackle. However, they will not be allowed to apply for an anterless 'deer control permit. The muzzle-loader season will be Held October 31 through November 8. Muzzle-loaders must purchase a permit prior to the opening of the general deer season on October 17. They are only allowed to take one deer. If persons possessing a muzzle-loader permit choose to take a deer during the regular rifle season, they will not be allowed to hunt during the muzzle-loader season. A muzzle-loader permittee may purchase an anterless deer control permit or an archery permit, but not both. The elk season is set for September 30 through October 13. In addition to the open bull permits which may be purchased July 1 through August 7, 1,885 restricted permits have been authorized, including 310 bull permits, 815 anterless permits, and 760 hunter's choice permits. The archery elk season will be held concurrently with the archery deer season, August 22 through September 7, in the open area bull elk hunting units of the state. Persons purchasing archery elk permits by July 31 are eligible for a drawing of 150 hunter's choice permits valid for any open area bull elk hunting unit. Elk hunters must choose whether they wish to hunt during the archery season or general rifle season. The antelope hunt, with 310 resident permits and 27 nonresident permits available, will be held September 5-13. A late antelope hunt will be held on the Snowville and Promontory units, with 35 M resident and 3 nonresident buck permits available. Archers possessing an antelope permit may hunt 15 days prior to the regular season. A total of 118 resident moose permits and 9 nonresident moose permits, including 27 anterless permits on the Uinta North Slope, are available in 1981. Moose hunts will be held in the Daggett and Cache-North Rich units September 12-29 and September 12-20 respectively. On the Uinta North Slope, Chalk Creek, Morgan-South Rich and Ogden River units, hunts will be held October 31 to November 15. The buffalo hunt is set for October 31 through November 2 in the Henry Mountains. A total of 25 residents and 2 nonresident permits are available. Archers possessing a buffalo permit may hunt 15 days prior to the start of the regular season. The desert bighorn sheep hunt will be held September 12 through October 11, with 17 resident and 1 nonresident permits available. Cost for a resident bighorn sheep permit was raised to $200. For the first time, one Rocky Mountain goat permit will be available for the Lone Peak wilderness area between Little Cottonwood Canyon and American Fork Canyon. The hunt will be held September 12 through September 27. The cost of the permit is $200 to Utah residents only. |
