Show by Jan When we think of the wey it was back in the days of the pioneers, we always think of the many big advantages we have today, that they never even dreamed of. We think of our cars and trucks, telephone and radios, television and electricity. We think of running water and refrigerators, but we forget about the little things that today we couldn't get along without. They're the smaller comforts of home. What would today's housewife do without paper towel? It's so useful to do quickie clean up Jobs. What about her 409 or Fantastik? The Windex for the windows and Lysol for the odors? Back in those days, everyone carried hankies. They don't today, but it's not 'cause the noses stopped running. Someone invented Kleenex. They are much handier than hankies and besides they don't have to be washed. What did our poor forefathers do when they had an itch down in their ear? Let's face it, they couldn't reach for a Q-tip like we can today. Today we are all used to having the nice, cushy, 2-ply toilet paper in our wonderful plumbed bathrooms. It used to be they would have to make a trek to the out-house. They would have newspaper in hand, but not necessarily for reading purposes. They had no Charminl If a button popped off a shirt, or a snap broke on a pair of pants, they would have to take time out to fix It, or just have to suffer because they had no safety pins. What held up babies diapers? They didn't have any Pampers. People had to keep records back then, just like today, but they didn't have any typewriters so they would hire scribes to copy their records. People make mistakes, just like typewriters, but they didn't have any correction tape, so they ; would just have to start the whole page all over again. We can keep our homes today any temperature we want. While the bitter winds blow outside we can be a comfy 72 inside, I and in the hot, sultry I ; ' J l j j I. summer we can keep a cool 65. It was terrible if a girl ever wore pants back then. The closest thing they got to pants was their pantaloons, which were starched in sugar to keep them stiff. It probably wasn't so bad in the winter as in the summer. In the summer people got all hot and sticky, but I'll bet even more-so with sugary sweat running down your legs. I think I'll stick with Levi's and cut-offs. Today we can go to the fridge and get a glass of milk without having to milk the cow. Our meat will keep for quite a while, and most the foods have preservatives to keep them fresh. Back in the good old days people would per-spire too, but they didn't have any deodorant. What about toothpaste, after shave lotion, bobble pins, or hair spray? They had soap back then, but it was made out of lye. Not only do we have lye-less soap, we have lotion to boot! Isn't it strange, wecan sit in a nice, ,alr-conditionedfl-hdme, watching TV with a nice cold pop in hand and sometimes we think we have it rough??!! CARD OF THANKS I wish to thank everyone for their cards, letters, visits, flowers and good wishes during my recent illness. A special thanks to my family who went the extra mile to make me comfortable and well-cared for. Elda Haws |
