Show Area Rockhounds Field Trip Members of the Color Country Gem and Mineral Society returned Tuesday from an all-day outing to the Kimberly mining area. The group joined the newly formed Piute Rockhounders for the rigorous all day excursion which included gold panning and rock hunting. Nine members of the Panguitch based Color Country rockhounds joined 28 members of the Piute group in the search. They were successful in finding amethyst crystals and panning "flour gold." The area around the old town of Kimberly is known for its gold and amethyst. Panning "flour gold" requires skill, deftness, and infinite patience and Panguitch resident George Proctor was so enthusiastic 'about the search, he brought home several gallons of Kimberly sand to con tinue his panning at home. Thelma (Mrs. Clyde) Whittaker, Cir-cleville, is the president of the Piute Rockhounders, the most recently formed group in Utah. Color Country president Bill Niebel presented the Piute group their certificate of membership in the Rocky Mountain Federation, a mineralogical society. Attending the day's activities from the Panguitch and Panguitch Lake areas were Leland and Cleo Clark, Clem and Maryann Church, George Proctor, Bill Niebel, Marlen McWilliams, Dolly Collins, and Alda Cooley. The Color Coutnry Gem and Mineral Society has cancelled its plans to visit the Orderville bench area this month and has planned instead, a trip to Panguitch Lake for August 16. Members and guests plan to meet at the Hiich-N-Post campground on North Main Street in Panguitch at 9 a.m. They have planned a pot luck lunch for noon at the old Leland Clark family cabin at Panguitch Lake. |
