Show LETTER TO THE EDITOR Itnike IssiH' Editor: This is to notify you that agenda item number 12a on thi- agenda of the State Board of Education for January failed to contain some information necessary to understand the position of the Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers on the matter of the anti-lock braking system on school buses The agenda also contained some information erroneously credited to the Utah Congress. This letter is being sent to correct errors made in that agenda The Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers is primarily interested in Otmtlmiil a moratorium on t he use of the anti-lock braking system while the system is being further tested to determine its safety A current moratorium is scheduled to be lifted on April 1, 1978. Insufficient data are available at this point to show that the anti-lock braking system is fail-proof and further testing is warranted to determine conclusively its full safety qualities before its use is mandated on buses which transport school children Iti view of that circumstance, th" State Board of Education has asked the Department of Transportation to hold public hearings on the matter to determine if the braking requirements promulgated by the federal government can be met by devices and specifications other than the anti-lock system. We believe that the questions on the safety of the anti-lock system have not been adequately satisfied and the further testing is warranted and necessary before a correct determination can be made. We have petitioned congress through our Utah congressional delegation and the National Department of Transportation to maintain the moratorium pending further testing Waller D Talbot State School Superin tendent |
