Show Escalante Chit Chat Fay Alvey The weather is still beautiful, no storm, just a few fluffs clouds Some of the stockmen sold their calves for a good price which lifts morale The family of Ila Alvey took her to the Garfield Memorial Hospital to be cared for hoping her condition will improve Retha Shurti was home between treatments and made pie, so she is gel ting back to normal Betty Alvey got word that her brother, Glade Roundy was quite ill so she went to see him in Salt Lake City, going via D Cedar City to take daughter Irene Tail along They also visited Jay and Linda Stokes in the area The Rodney Cottams have a new granddaughter born to Bryce and Colleen in Alano, Nev. Missed last week the compnay at Evadean Liston's home, and some of them were mine. Lola Alvey and boys of Mapleton; Beth Blakey and son of Springville and Utahna Poulsen and family of Salt Lake City. Evadean and Utahna spent all night making chile. Ivan and Nelda Willis went to Provo to meet Maureen and Dean Wayne; they all attended the BYU Homecoing spectacular, then went to Grantsville to visit Lowell and family. Lowell had spent two weeks in Cincinnati at a cheminstry workshop. He is often called to go somewhere for consultation. The Arnold Alveys had a brief visit from daughter Janeen Duncan of Loa. The Orville Cowles had daughter Caroline home for the weekend. Ira Huston had his daughter and family, the Thompsons here from California. They had been touring the many Ashing places and wound up here. Ray and Lana Christian have purchased a home in Escalante from Glen and Rose Anderson and plan to move here in the near furture They have two boys, Forrest, age I and Spencer, age 2 Ray was bom and raised in St. George, the son of Walter Christian and Ixis S Hafen. His grandmothers were a Mecham and a Blake Lana is from Elmo, south of Price, the duaghter of Myron Willson and Ada Winder. Her grand mothers were a Day and a Mills They think they may have distant relatives in the area. Maybe some kii Ray is a former college professor with specialties in vegetation and land-forms. He is a writer of Western novels and nature publications. They will be busy on their house which is the big brick home across from the Birkmeycrs Cook Liston had a vist from his sister Lois Sprake and her daughter Paula from Las Vegas. Lois and husband Ralton started on a cruise to the Bahamas but the water got so rough they were rescued and wound up in Texas. He wants to try it again but Lois would rather stay on land. Vera and Millard Davis had a visit from Millard's two girls, Deanna and Kathey and Kathy's daughter Nicol. Sacrament meeting Sunday was a testimonial for Brian Griffin who is going on an LDS mission to England Bill talked first and announced the rest of the program. Talks were given by Dawn, Evan Excell, Brian and Bishop Marsh. Nicki Excell, Patrice and .Icanette Griffin sang, accompanied by Dawn Randy and Boyd sang During Brian's talk he asked Gaden Griffin and Jimmy Taylor to stand, then told them he was leaving them 26 pair of boxer shorts to be divided evenly between them The Jim Excells came from Panguitch for the meeting All of Bill and Dawn's family were here, and Ray and Lenora Griffin came out and looked quite well An interesting and we hope fruitful day was Oct. 10; most of the members of the Energy Commission of the state were here The group toured the two recommended sites for a power plant, the Alvey Wnh the Big Flat That evening a town meeting was held which was well attended Dale Marsh welcomed everyone and introduced Dr. George Hill who took charge The county officials were here, John Williams, representing the five-county organization. Gov. Calvin Hampton who is attorney for Resources Internatinal, men running for office, business men and many concerned citizens. Mayor Dale Marsh pled with the environmentalists to let us live and have some of the nice things of life Greg Allen, who has coached here four years told how the young people have to leave after graduation because there are no jobs here. Art Bacon loves the country like it is but sees the need for industry to keep the young folks. Philo Carter thinks we should have the pioneer spirit, sharing, to live and let live. Bob Sorensen was appalled at the environmentalists and told what we should do to them All of the natives, and most of the citizens agreeed that the plant should be built. Newlyweds, Dick and Margean Schow came to harvest the garden and fix her home for winter Stanley and Marlene Stowe and boys came; he hunted elk and Marlene and boys visited at the Delane Griffin home. Starns and Fon Mecham visited son Ron and family in Las Vegas Ushus Spencer brought his bride home last Saturday. She is the former Lapreal Lund of Cedar City. A meeting was held last week to discuss the possibility of getting the North Ward Church for a community center. Those from out of town were Joe Bales, Earl Henrie, Stan Stot, Max Stewart, Henry Jolly and Gayla Foster The group toured the building and discussed purchase price, repairs and the funding of these. Doyle cottam was appointed to see about buying it from the church, Phyllis Alvey was to contact the different clubs to see if they were interested in meeting there and helping finance if some grants could be arranged. We enjoy this country and don't want it destroyed, but with those Sierra folks we really are annoyed They live in homes of luxury and coming here's a treat, getting out and roughing it, 'hey think it's really neat. They blocked our planned industry, our young folks went elsewhere We're only jusi existing and they don't even care We're an endangered species in U'ah's Southern part m i |
