Show Senior Signs Henrieville Staff Sergeant Larry Cathey, Army representative in Richfield, announced that Barton Jennings Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith of Henrieville, has joined the Army. Smith is a senior at Bryce Valley High School and will graduate in May. He entered the Army under the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). This program allows the individual to enlist now and leave up to a year later for active duty with job selection guaranteed at the time of enlistment into the DEP. Smith plays varsity baseball and basketball at Bryce Valley High and is very active in the LDS Church. He chose to be trained as an infantry indirect fire crewman (mortars) and will receive a $2,500.00 cash bonus at the end of his training. He will receive his basic and advanced training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of his training, Smith chose to be staioned with the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Wash. Smith has been employed by various farmers and ranchers in the Bryce Valley area. He will have five months to finish school. He will leave for active duty on June 20. |
