Show Student-Doctor To Work in Local Area A student doctor, Howard Kenney, from the University of Utah, will be spending the next five weeks working with physicians at the Garfield Memorial Clinics in Panguitch, Escalante, and Qrcleville. Physicians have been chosen by the university, because of their interest and skill in helping train this young doctor. This experience is important to the student as part of his training. Dr. Kenney is a fourth year student who has expressed an interest in family practice, spending the month of March in a practice and town like Panguitch, as a part of his medical school training, will give him an idea about small town living and practice. He will be helping local physicians in the area in their practice and will be applying his years of training in medical school to practical matters. Any treatment will be under the direct supervision of Drs. Harry Cavanagh and Stan Bezek. This is the first time in medical education that medical students have been allowed to work with preceptor doctors outside of the University setting. This is felt to be a novel approach to the old problem of trying to interest young physicians in practicing in rural areas, as older physicians retire and move from such areas. Dr. Kenney began working in the clinics on Monday. |
