The Garfield County Sheriff Office Is Garfield County Program Underway To Deter Thefts "I got home and my whole house had been gone through, my valuable jewelery, six of my husband's guns, shells, hunting knife, gun cleaning kit, wallet, an electric knife, a watch, binoculars, my silver dollar collection, and other items were all missing," said a recent burglary victim of Garfield Countv. In this particular case of burglary, one of the rifles taken had a serial number that the owner had previously written down. Because of this one serial number a lot of the items from this burglary and other unsolved cases of the western States were recovered. Had there been some form of identification on the other items the recovery would have been much greater. "By the end of March, a burglary deterent program handled through the Garfield County Sheriff's department will begin. This program has been tried in different areas throughout the United States and has worked with great success," said Keith Fackrell, Garfield County Sheriff. The Garfield County Sheriff's Posse will contact each household of Garfield County and if the citizens desire will assist in putting identification marks on all personal items of value in their homes and summer cabins, with one of the 10 engravers owned by Garfield spearheading the program to have Identification placed on all property to deter thefts and aid in recovery of property. County. The individual will keep a record of each item marked and stickers will be put on the front and back windows stating "These premises are protected." Valuables have been premanenlly engraved with code marks to assist law en forcement agencies in their positive identification." If a valuable that has been marked is stolen it can be en tered on NCIC (National Criminal Investigation Center) computer which will aid in the apprehension of the criminal and the return of the merchandise to the proper owner Sheriff Fackrell said. If an officer sees someone with a large amount of items that are unusual for the circumstances they can be checked and within minutes if these items have been marked, the officer will know where the item was stolen, what day and from whom, providing it had been entered on NCIC, Fackrell added. "It is our hope that all of the citizens- of the county will participate. If the citizens would like to call prior to being contacted they can call 676-2678 in Panguitch or 826-4647, Escalante," concluded Sheriff Fackrell. |
