Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY We still get clouds but they are mighty stingy with their moisture and we are drying up worse by the day. Mont Griffin made it home from the hospital in time for the celebration, Lillian Lyman is gradually improving but still in Las Vegas under the doctor's care. Her mother Del-la Christiansen is holding down the fort here. Dick Christiansen came from Las Vegas for the weekend, he really looks good, not that skinny kid ha used to be. He works at a hotel and teaches in the music dept. at UNLV. Several of his musical compositions were used in the spring music festival, and of course Las Vegas claims him but he Is still ours. Guy and Twila Lemming and son Lynn are home after visiting family members In North and South Carolina. Grant Lis-ton had his niece Rose Marie Newman of Las Vegas for the weekend. Lee came from Cedar City and had a friend from San Francisco, his name is Jim Vallandingham and he is related to the Kings and Halls in this area. LaMar Gracie and Boyd Cot-tam have ,new pickup trucks just alike. Evan Excell came for Vicki and the baby, they spent a week at the Bill Griffins and Randy Griffin went back to Price with them. The Wanles Alveys had Dick and Donnette Lee and girls from Syracuse here. Wells and Emma Lou and family came from EUensburg, Washington to visit Twila Mclnelly and help her change her heating system, they also visited at the Daniel Cowles home, Newell and Dor-thy Cowles and baby were here from Richfield. Jane Roundy had Evan and Elsie and girls here from Og-den. Warren Woolsey came from Cedar City to get Kathleen and the boys who spent a week at the Dale Marsh home, he also visited his mother, Mildred Adair. His class held their ten year reunion at Calf Creek park, then met at night for a supper at Whltey's cafe. The classes 51 through 54 met at the high school gym, visited and awarded prizes; Wells and Emma Lou Mclnelly won a toy car for having traveled the most miles, Howard Munson was recognized for hU head having grown the farthest up through his hair; Blake D. Robinson and Deon Alvey tied for gaining the most weight: Dale Reynolds for having changed the most, and Carrie Griffin for having the most kids. They toured the old and new school buildings and talked about their school days. The Llnford Christensens live close to Dale Reynolds in Calif, and sent greetings to folks here. Dale has six more months than he can retire from the service. Iona Alvey is home and reports the new grandson doing fine, Dee and Arvonne and girls came from Cedar City. The Ott Roundys have a new grandson born to Vernon Dean and Peg in Monroe, they went to see him. The Hal Barkers have a baby girl in Salt Lake City, Twila Mclnelly had Just come home so Nell Barker went up to help out. , , Harmon and Cora Shakes-pear of Tropic visited the Griffins here, Vernlle was here from Salt Lake, Weldon and Marie Porter moved their trailer house on the Dick Schow lot out here on the edge of town, they have a lawn started all ready, must have somo secret formula. Donald and Darlene Griffin have daughter Lana here from Provo. Kent and Marlyn Griffin and family aro here from Calif., they brought Peggy home. Whltey and Mar-alda Porter have Marvin and Gloria here from Phoenix. Gerald Haycock and family visited at the Dee Haws home. Harold and George Miller came from Salt Lake to bring Julie Droubay and Denlse Alvey home for the holiday. Dicey Coombs had daughter Phyllis Jerett here from Salt Lake, and Eph Coombs had son Larry and family from Monroe. The Mayo Roundys had his sister Marlon Foote and family here from California. The Schows, Ken Blake and Betty were here from Salt Lake City. Nellie Bailey had Connie and Alfred Jepsen and family from Calif, and Calvin and Martha Rae Schow from Kearns. The Que Porters had her brother Sherril Houston, his wife and five kids here from Layton, Emmett Porter had Dick's daughter and husband, Allen and Ladonna Hobbs of Draper. Vera Davis had a visit from son Vernon and family of Richfield. Minnie and Billie Davis went to Provo where he had a date with a specialist and is scheduled for surgery in August, so is Ruby Griffin, she and Clar-on were there. Machelle Fos ter of Tropic accompanied her grandparents north. Duane Dutton and family moved into the apartment belonging to Delia Christiansen. The Rol Porters and some of their grandkids went to Richfield. Doug and Barbara were at the Stan Haycocks, Clem and Don-netta Griffin at the Ernie Griffins. Doyle and Thelma Cottam, Ivan and Nelda Willis went on a tour, but that did not keep Elwood and Vaunda Willis and Lynn and Garna Mclnelly from coming to visit Blaine and the house. Of course the Mclnel-lys visited the Hyrum Cole-mans who also had Clevia Swindle and family of Calif., Joe and Donna Rae Barker and family of Monroe, Valeree and Michael Davles of Salt Lake City, Douglas and Jerl Mclnelly of Richfield. LaVern and Mary Griffin had business in Panguitch, so did Rol Porter. The Morlas Halls had Marllla and Rulon Jolly and family from Cedar City, daughter Lillian Smith and boys came from Provo with some friends, Jim and Janet Thompson, they stayed the weekend and Lillian stayed for a two week vacation. Sam Spencer of Redland. Calif., his son Mike and family came to visit old friends and relatives and tour the range where Sam used to run sheep. Norman Christensen made the trip to Phoenix In sock feet and found it cooler that way. Howard and Ida Church and part of their family were here. Rex and Eva Allen and oldest granddaughter, Vonn's girl of Riverton were here for the weekend. Rex was working on a giant tree with a hand saw and pocket knife, he said he was not trying to cut It down, just wound it so it may die eventually. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lyman and son of Log-andale, Nevada were visitors at the Earl Woolsey home. Bonnie and Jeris LUes and baby were here from Salt Lake City, Many former residents and their families came for the reunions and the celebration: Howard and Lanea Munson of Cedar City, Blake D. and Ka-thy Robinson of Salt Lake City, Jim and Janet Spencer of Or-em, Betty Jean Dowdell and Deloy Spencer of Provo, Sher-rill Khurtz and wife of Las Ve-gat, the Woolsey sisters, Carrie, Jackie and Corene, Roma and Ken Clark, Ken got a prize for serving the longest In the Service. Jerry and Louise Imlay were here and Linda Price and family came from Calif. Relatives here got word that Dr. Lars Peterson of Spanish Fork Is in the Utah Valley hospital recovering from a heart attack. La Vina Pollock went to Cedar City to the eye doctor, Alan took her to Panguitch where they were met by grandson Steven who drove them to Cedar and back to Panguitch. John Palmer and Lance Hatch were home from their jobs in Nevada for the 24th. The Vic ther anything goes. Cottams had daughter Dlanne (Howard and family home and Delmar from Las Vegas. William and Jetta Mitchell finished their visit in St. George and returned home. Don and Lillian Coleman and family went to Salt Lake City to meet Del and Ron Whiting and family of Elko, Nevada, they spent two days of sightseeing and visiting. The North ward Sacrament meeting was put on by Starns Mecham and family, talks were given by, Starns, Marlen Haws and Geraldine Liston, a poem by Sherri Lynn Liston, song Jelyn Haws, song Deon Alvey, Geraldine Liston and Marlene Haws. The South ward speak- en were Elwood and Vaunda Willis and Vernlle Griffin. Darrell Alvey went to Richfield with horses and Dlanne went to Beaver where she rode every race and only fell off once. Frank Alvey came In contact with a horse's hoof but it was only a grazing blow so he survived. Jan and Doncne Liston took Johnny Alvey, Jerry Taylor and Dahl Liston to Ephralm for a basketball clinic. The celebration went off I with good weather and no serious accidents, the animals in the rodeo must have been greased as very few riders could stay jn. Jan Liston was judged Miss Escalante with Christine Droubay and Anna-lee Spencer attendants. Prizes in the parade were given to Dale Wilson for his wonder machine, Hakes and Shaw industries, Enthusiast Club and Town board, South ward Sunday School and MIA, honor- j able mention to Ann's Beauty 1 shop and Lions Club. In the junior parade Gene Griffin's girls took first place, the ONeil boys second and Stephanie Shurtz third. Kim Nelson was MC of the program assisted by his brunette wife. The 24th of July known as Pioneer day has always been so special we celebrate a special way. It used to be we planned and sewed pew dresses for the girls trimmed in lace and ruffles and hair all done In curls. The boys new shirts and levls and hair trimmed short and neat, with boots instead of sandals worn upon their feet. The boys and girls looked different, now they're much the sme, you cannot tell the gender even by the name, there's no distinctive styling for either of their clothes, mostly they are scanty and bro- |
