Show inGHWAY SIGN CHANGES BIG EXPENSE Changing Utah's Highway signs to a lower speed limit could cost over $124,000 according to David L. Kennison, Chief Traffic Engineer for the Highway Department Mr. Ken; nison has been evaluating alternate methods for changing speed limits In the event it becomes necessary to restrict traffic to 50 miles per hour. About 2,022 signs in the state post speeds In excess of 50 miles per hour. To replace these with similar signs would cost an estimated $125,236.80. For half that cost or $81,576.09 new reflectorized overlays could be placed on the existing signs. Mr. Kennison pointed out that If other states make similar changes demands for reflectorized material would be high and could delay delivery for several months. The fastest and least expensive method to reduce speed limits would be to post appropriate notices at all entrances to the state advising motorists of a maximum state-wide speed limit of 50 m.p.h., and Instructing them to disregard all signs permitting speeds in excess of that limit. This solution, however, poses some legal questions which may have to be answered by the Attorney General's Office regarding Highway Department responsibility- topro-vide regulatory signing. |
