Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY The weather man cooperated beautifully for the party Saturday and everyone seemed to have a good time. Bllle Barker and wife came from St. George bringing freshly picked daffodils which added a breath of Spring to the celebration. Andrew and Isabell Spencer also came from sunny Dixie. The food committees were Reed and Wilmirth Wooley, Minnie and Bllile Davis, Nell and Theo Barker from the North ward; Ruth and Forest Alvey. Beryl and Retha Shurtz, Cecil and Carrie Griffin from the South. They cooked and served ham dinner to 220 people, three teenage girls from each ward helped wait tables. Theo drew the table farthest way from the kitchen and said ha felt like had walked from the Cedar Washes and he could aw that a pair of roller skates was what he needed. Nelda Willis and Mary Steed were the program committee and got Dale Marsh to be master of ceremonies which he did well. Vaunda Willis (yes, she and FJwcod came from Richfield) led the group in singing "I Love Those Dear Hearts and Gentle People Who Live and Love in My Home Town." The 8th grade, with the help of Pauline Lott and Dawn Griffin acted out the story of Cinderella with complete cast even to the mice. South Ward Relief Society President Florence Alvey gave the address of welcome and thanked everyone contributing to the success of the party. Marlene Haws and Deon Alvey sang accompanied by Areola Gall Bailey, gave a reading; Gates; Lance Hatch, stepson of the Mammys without the Pap pys did a song and dance number, they were Betty R. Alvey, Louise List on, Coleen Burrows and Clorne Vadrene. Laurie Da Holly very graciously came from Cannonville to sing for us accompanied by her daughter, and her mother Rachel Thompson cme with them. Fay Alvey demonstrated the improper way to do vialting teaching; Hal Shurtz sang a classical song with guitar accompaniment; the Singing Mothers sang two numbers and Ervin Burrows gave an an-announcement with all the actions. There was a dance at night with th A s and G's orchestra. The former residents we id-entitled were Mary Lyman, John and Orabell Weigle; La-vand and Virginia Bauer. Or-rln and Melda Porter and the Ray Moosmans, the Peterson brothers, Lars and Rulon. Calvin and Martha Rae Schow, Clem and Donnett Griffin, Glen and Coleen Imlay. Ernal Porter, Bonnie and Holbert Smith, the Shurtz sisters. Vivian Greux and Betty Schow. Champ and Afton Church, the Wllford Roes; if we miss any one no slight is intended. Qulnn Roundy drove all a-lone from Phoeniz, Arizona, he had a break between Jobs so came home to spend It. His brother Ott and Hilda were a-way on basket ball tournaments but he had Starns and Fon Mecham to stay with Ray and Mildred Ada : and Bill and Sharon Francisco were here for ihe weekend Ed and Veda Mitchell had son Garlan and family of Cedar City. Guy Pollock and family came from Richfield, Vonda was wearing a leg cast, she had knocked her knee cap off and had to have it anchored in place. Kate Porter had daughter Bonnie and granddaughter Lonnie, Janet and husband, Bob Nelson from Salt Lake. The Mortal Halls had daughter Shirlene and family here and Micky Smith. Ronald Mecham and Dale Rider came from Cedar City. Whitey and Maralda Porter and Claron and Ruby Griffin visited in Phoeniz. The Arnold Alveys got word they have a new grandson born to Del Ray and wife in Salt Lake City so Zella and Tommy went to see him. Frank and Idella Imlay waited for weeks for the stork to deliver them a new grandchild; they got discouraged and came home so that day a baby girl was born to Francis and Barbara, so they went back to Filmore. Forgot to tell about the great-grandson of the S. J. Alveys born to DeAnn and Luther Smith of Kennewkk, Washington. Coach Evan Excell took Boyd Griffin and Wade Barney to the State basket ball tournament. Dick Excell and Otho Bulkley of Pangultch wore here working on the grandstand at the race track. Karl and Ann Spencer were here helping Usher, they have an offer to go to Guam. Road and Wilmirth Wooley and son Ronnie went to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit Marva and family, they got Beumont Griffin to herd their chickens, Ronnie returned to his Job in Salt Lake. Bill and Winona Boyle went to Las Vegas to get son BUI. Kate Porter had a visit from her cousin, Nathella Shupe and husband of Idaho; she is a daughter of Emily Bailey and was born and raised here but has not been here for 38 years. The Les Johns have his mother here for a visit. Those we heard of having business in Pangultch were Grace and Claron Barney, Marlene, Ricky and Bill Haws. Fon Mech am, Coleen Burrows, June Thorson, Lynn Witikin, Loret-ta Spencer and Clorene Vadrene. Lane and Geraldine Listen went to Farmington, New Mexico to get a load of mud. Randal Lyman and daughter Joyce Woolsey came from California for the weekend. Reed Thompson was here from Co-dar City. Two officials from the Ogden school for the deaf and blind were here ; the Prlnicpal Dr. Donald H. Edwards and Melvin A. Neilson PHD, head of the speech department John Noi man had a visit from his uncle. Ott Roundy was presented a plaque for outstand ing safety efforts last year, the road crew had no loss of time from accidents of a.iy kind Mr. and Mrs. Kent Certain were here. Beryl and Retha Shurtz had son Carl vie and family here. Dale Marsh and Paul Steed went to Salt Lake City to get parts for the saw mill. DUP meeting was held last week at the home of Vice Captain Betty R. Alvey; the lessen on the Great Salt Lake (continued inside) ESCALANTE (continued) and her Islands was given by assistant class leader Lola Zenz Smith Alvey is home between jobs and while they had daughter Linda home they had a family dinner which took in quite a number. All of the college kids are home between terms. Dr. Arvll Stork, horticultur 1st and director of the State landscape and improvement work told a group how to improve our town and premises. The wheels are set in motion for another ileanup campaign set for March 23. Bob Sorenson and a friend came from Culver City, Calif, to begin work on the property west of Mohr Christensen's where they plan to build a Gift and Rock Shop and a coin operated laundry. Areola Gates had business in Cedar City. Jerry Imlay, 16 year old son of Glen and Coleen Imlay now living in Kanosh, has been presented his Duty to God a ward, he earned it while living here in the North ward. To get this they have to get four individual awards which means a lot of work and almost perfect attendance at church meetings. He is a grandson of thp n Tf fnwlpR nnrt th Frank Imlays. Congratulations Jer- 1 ry. A class on Defensive Driving started here last Thursday with an enrollment of 40, there are to be a total of eight lessons presented. Earl and Ne- ! thella Woolsey, Dee and Elda Haws, Lorell Munson, Mohr Christensen and Bill Vadrene ' went to Tropic for a meeting ' with the State road officials about the Junction at the Pink ! Cliffs. They promised to examine it to see If there could be some changes made. Nethella still has a few copies of the Es-calante Story left and if she sells as many aa last year she will be out, so if you want one better get it now. In Sacrament meeting Sunday the North ward speakers were Quinn Roundy. Andrew Spencer and Gary Cunningham, the Jr. Sunday School sang. The South ward speakers did not show up so Bp. Ivan Willis and Ex-Bp. Morris Shirts did the speaking. Gam Barn son and family and Mrs. Gleaves came from Kingston to tell Barry, who is working for Don Kelly that he has his notice to be examined for the service. Eph Coombs had a visit from his brother Titus and wife from Idaho. We are certain that Spring is near, it snows, then the wind blows it clear; folks are coughing and sneezing like mad. Spring has sprung and aren't we glad. |
